Tiziana Botteri

"The octagonal Church of San Rocco, built in 1526, was commissioned by Giangiacomo de Medici, known as Medeghino (brother of the future Pope Pius IV, archpriest of Mazzo), to construct an octagonal fortress disguised as a temple against the Grisons.
The deception was discovered in 1531, but the people of Tirano completed the temple.
It features a beautiful 18th-century portal and a wooden altarpiece with a statue of the saint."

Giuseppe Citterio

"Church ⛪️ closed, only opens when there are funerals for people who lived in the area."

The Fortress-Temple Paradox

The Church of San Rocco in Tirano holds a fascinating dual history. Commissioned in 1526 by Giangiacomo de Medici, it was initially conceived as an octagonal fortress disguised as a temple. This strategic move was aimed at defending against the Grisons. However, the deception was discovered in 1531, leading to the project's interruption. Reddit

Despite the initial setback, the people of Tirano took it upon themselves to complete the structure as a temple. This community effort transformed the intended military outpost into a place of worship. The church's unique octagonal shape is a direct testament to its unusual origins, making it a distinctive landmark in the region. Reddit

Today, the church stands as a symbol of local resilience and history. While it's not open for regular visits, its exterior and the story behind its construction offer a compelling glimpse into the past. The surrounding area, including the vineyards, adds to the picturesque setting. Reddit

Architectural Uniqueness and Interior Glimpse

The most striking feature of the Church of San Rocco is its octagonal design. This unusual shape sets it apart from many traditional churches and hints at its original purpose as a fortress. The bell tower was added a few years after the main structure, further enhancing its distinctive profile. Reddit

Although the church is generally closed, accounts suggest that inside, visitors would find an oil on canvas depicting Christ on the cross flanked by the Madonna, San Sebastiano, San Francesco, and San Rocco. This altarpiece was reportedly added in the 17th century as a devotion by those who survived a severe plague that affected Tirano and the entire Valtellina region. Reddit

Even from the outside, the church's architectural form is impressive. The 18th-century portal is also noted as a beautiful feature. The church's location in the 'Rasiga' area, at the entrance to the Poschiavo Valley, adds to its scenic appeal, especially when viewed from the nearby vineyard paths. Reddit
