What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Terme di Petriolo offers a unique, free natural hot spring experience with therapeutic waters, though it's a rustic setting without amenities. Visitors appreciate the natural beauty and healing properties, but some note the strong sulfur smell and potential crowds. It's a laid-back, natural escape for those seeking relaxation.
"I don’t know about this currently closed spa, but the hot springs 50 meters away are free and pleasant. Take water shoes or flip-flops and be careful walking down to the pools. Parking is free along the street. There is construction and refurbishment happening which is loud but an early morning soak is highly recommended for sore muscles. The water gets hot: between 42-47C degrees"

"There are two options right next to each other to enjoy the hot springs;
-the free baths without any facilities at all. Some folks were topless, it seemed busy, the grounds are rough terrain and water-shoes are necessary.
-the terme baths next to it with showers, lockers, WC, changing rooms and vending machines for beverages. This option costs €15 p.p. The website says there are rental bathrobes at €5 but they were out when we arrived, as well as the locks for the lockers. TIP: bring your own bathrobe, slippers, body-wash, towels and a padlock
The bistro across the street didn’t serve anything of the menu because they had no kitchen staff. Pack a lunch!!"

"If you are around, take some minutes or more and jump in the hot pools. Its for free and not maintained. Free parking along the road before and after the commercial thermal bath. Be aware that there are no showers or dressing rooms and the water has a sulfur smell 😊 you can refresh in the river and at the street some sellers are offering 👍 refreshments and food. Enjoy"

The Natural Hot Springs Experience
Travelers often describe the water as therapeutic, perfect for soothing sore muscles. The contrast between the hot springs and the icy river flowing alongside is a highlight for many, offering a natural hot-and-cold therapy. While the sulfur smell is noticeable, most visitors find it a small price to pay for the rejuvenating benefits and the sheer beauty of the location. It's a place to relax, unwind, and connect with nature.
It's important to manage expectations: this is not a luxury spa. The facilities are minimal, and the environment is natural and somewhat unkempt. However, this very rawness is part of its charm. Many recommend bringing essentials like water shoes, a towel, and snacks, as there are no amenities on-site. The experience is about embracing the natural elements and enjoying the simple pleasure of warm, healing waters.
Navigating the Free vs. Paid Options
The commercial spa, while not the focus of free access, offers a more structured experience with amenities like changing rooms and showers. However, many visitors prefer the freedom and natural beauty of the free springs. Some reviews suggest the nudist section of the free springs is better maintained and cleaner than other free areas. The key takeaway is that you can enjoy the therapeutic waters without paying an entrance fee by opting for the natural springs.
When visiting, be aware of the proximity of the two. The free access points are typically just a few meters away from the official thermal bath. This allows visitors to experience the same natural thermal water source but in a more natural, less developed environment.
