"Absolutely stunning! The Area Marina Protetta di Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo is a true gem of Sardinia. The water is crystal clear, the mountain backdrop and surrounding scenery are breathtaking, and the whole area feels untouched and peaceful. I went scuba diving here and it was incredible—so much marine life and vibrant underwater landscapes. Even just the boat ride was worth it, with panoramic views and calm, turquoise waters. This is a beautifully protected area, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Sardinia—whether you want to snorkel, dive, or simply enjoy a boat trip. Unforgettable experience! 🌊⛰️🐟"

"Lovely spot but being high season, loads of visitors coming in hourly on the tourist boats. Still plenty of room on the beach and in the water though.
Beware of the flesh eating fish 🤣🤣 while i was dabbling about in the water, I noticed there were cleaner fish keen to nibble off any dead skin they could find on my legs - for free!! Win!!"

"One of the best places to visit in the area. You can either book an excursion for the day (50-100€ per Person, usually includes a light meal), or rent a boat yourself in Porto San Paolo (starting around 110€ for a standard 40hp rubber dinghi, no license required, fuel costs extra..it cost us 45 € for a trip to both tavolara and nearby islands). Tavolara itself is very expensive, bring your own food/drink on board if allowed."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Look for tours that are family-friendly and perhaps offer a light meal onboard, as this can simplify logistics. While Tavolara Island itself has limited activities for young children, the focus on the water, spotting fish (even the 'nibbling' cleaner fish!), and the general boat experience is usually a big hit. Remember to pack plenty of sun protection and snacks to keep everyone happy and comfortable.
💰 Budget Travelers
Pack your own picnic lunch, snacks, and plenty of water. Dining on Tavolara Island can be quite pricey, so bringing your provisions will save a significant amount of money. Look for free swimming and snorkeling spots away from the main tourist hubs to maximize your experience without additional costs.
💑 Couples & Romantic Getaways
Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (May-June or September-October) for a more tranquil and romantic atmosphere, with fewer crowds. Enjoying a sunset picnic on a quiet beach or watching the coastline light up as the sun dips below the horizon can create unforgettable memories.

Understanding the Marine Protected Area
The MPA encompasses a significant stretch of coastline and several islands, including the iconic Isola di Tavolara. The clear, shallow waters are ideal for observing a variety of fish, corals, and other marine organisms. The area is a testament to successful conservation efforts, allowing visitors to witness a thriving underwater ecosystem.
Visitors can experience the MPA through various activities, from guided boat tours that highlight key ecological features to independent exploration via rented boats. The MPA's designation ensures that its natural beauty and ecological integrity are preserved for future generations, offering a unique glimpse into a healthy marine environment.
Exploring Tavolara Island
Reaching Tavolara is typically done via boat tours or private rentals from nearby ports. Once there, visitors can explore the small village, enjoy the views, or find spots for swimming. The island's unique history, including its brief period as a self-proclaimed kingdom, adds to its allure.
While the island itself offers a unique experience, many visitors find the surrounding waters and smaller coves more appealing for swimming and snorkeling. It's advisable to be prepared for higher costs if dining on the island and to bring your own provisions for a more budget-friendly visit.
Boat Trips and Rentals
For those seeking more independence, renting a rubber dinghy (gommone) from Porto San Paolo is a popular option. Smaller dinghies typically do not require a boating license, making them accessible to a wider range of visitors. This allows for a personalized itinerary, enabling you to discover hidden beaches and swim in pristine waters at your own pace. Remember that fuel costs are usually extra and can add up.
When planning your boat excursion, consider the time of year. During peak season (July-August), tours can be crowded, so booking in advance is recommended. Opting for a weekday trip or visiting during the shoulder seasons (May-June, September-October) can offer a more serene experience. Always remember to pack essentials like sunscreen, water, and snacks, as services on some smaller islands might be limited or expensive.
