What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise Roman theatres for their impressive preservation and architectural grandeur, seeing them as testaments to ancient Roman engineering. However, some are disappointed by extensive modern reconstruction and unexpected closures due to events. The historical significance and potential for imagining ancient spectacles remain strong draws.
"Were there twice but I suck at timing, closed. Anyway you should think wow, this is in good shape. It was reconstructed and they still use it for concert.
But the final point is, that Romans build it 2000 years ago and all we did is added a little cement and as good as new 🤫"
Rok Stražar
"Well preserved Roman theatre. A testimony to the ancient Roman character of Spoleto. It was closed when I was there but actually it didn't seem like anything special considering we are in Italy and these things are everywhere. There is limited pay parking on the street nearby. It's a good location to start exploring the city. Parking was 1.50 euro per hour. No car access from 00:00 to 11:00."

"The teatro is nice, the museum was just ok, but only 4 euro so not bad."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider bringing snacks and water, as amenities can be limited. The open-air nature of most theatres means planning for weather is also important. For younger children, focusing on the 'wow' factor of the size and age of the structure can be more engaging than detailed historical explanations. Many Roman theatres are located in city centers, making them easy to incorporate into a family-friendly day of sightseeing.
🏛️ History Buffs
Consider visiting with a knowledgeable guide or using audio guides if available to gain deeper insights into the theatre's context within the Roman Empire. Look for details like the scaenae frons (stage building) and the cavea (seating area) to understand the functional design. Many theatres are part of larger archaeological sites, so exploring the surrounding area can provide a more comprehensive understanding of Roman urban life.

The Enduring Legacy of Roman Theatres
Many Roman theatres we see today have been subject to extensive restoration over centuries. While this allows us to appreciate their original grandeur, it's important to note that significant portions might be modern reconstructions. For instance, some visitors point out that over half of a theatre's structure might be rebuilt with modern cement, which can alter the perception of its antiquity. Despite these reconstructions, the enduring presence of these theatres serves as a powerful testament to Roman ingenuity and their lasting impact on Western culture, influencing theatre design for millennia.
Today, these ancient sites continue to serve a purpose, hosting concerts, plays, and cultural events, bringing new life to old stones. Performances by artists like Sami Yusuf at the Roman Theatre in Amman highlight this ongoing connection between past and present. Visiting a Roman theatre offers a unique opportunity to connect with history, imagine ancient audiences, and appreciate the architectural achievements that have stood the test of time.
Navigating Your Visit: Practicalities and Perspectives
When it comes to experiencing the theatre itself, comfortable footwear is a must. The ancient stone seating and uneven ground can be challenging, so sturdy shoes are highly recommended for a pleasant exploration. While the historical significance is undeniable, be prepared for varying degrees of preservation. Some theatres are remarkably intact, while others feature substantial modern reconstruction using materials like cement. This can be a point of contention for some visitors, but many still find the experience enriching, appreciating the historical context and the sheer scale of these ancient structures.
Combining your visit with a broader city exploration is often a smart move. Roman theatres are frequently located in the heart of historic city centers, making them excellent starting points for discovering local attractions. For instance, the Roman Theatre in Spoleto is noted as a good location to begin exploring the city. This allows you to maximize your time and immerse yourself in the local history and culture.
