"I rode up to San Gennaro, Capannori, intending to ride my racing bike along the flank of the Pizzorne mountains until I descended to Matraia... under the scorching heat of these mid-July '23 days. A stop in San Gennaro... right at the parish church in the small village was and is a must. The reason is simply explained by the view of the parish church (stunning) but, above all, by what is preserved inside. Recently, during restoration work carried out in '19 at the Opificio delle Pietre Dire in Florence, it was discovered that a terracotta depicting the Archangel Gabriel announcing the coming of the Lord may have been created by Leonardo da Vinci or, alternatively, by Verrocchio's workshop (at least that's what the experts say), where the young Leonardo trained. Thanks to the Fondazione CRLucca, it was exhibited in Lucca at the Church of San Franceschetto for a short time before returning home... on that day of San Gennaro. The title of the exhibition was... "If it were an angel by Leonardo." It's worth remembering that along the entire mountain stretch you can enjoy a stunning panorama as far as the eye can see and that the Borgo di San Gennaro itself is charming and best discovered strictly on foot, with its beautiful buildings and narrow streets."
