What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Grotta Guattari to be an impressive cave with knowledgeable guides who offer thorough explanations of the Neanderthal skull and ancient animal bones. However, the experience is marred by the extremely poor maintenance of the exterior, with unkempt grounds and fallen banners detracting from the site's importance. Some visitors also reported disorganization in booking tours.
"Nice"
CHARNJIT SODHI
"The cave is very impressive. Our guide was kind and very knowledgeable. The tour lasted just under two hours. Aside from the skull (a reproduction; the original is at the EUR Museum of Civilization in Rome), scattered bones of various animals from that era are visible. The cave can be partially visited for 5-6 minutes, following a twenty-meter route inside, at a depth of 3-4 meters from the road. Groups of 5-6 people enter at a time. Protective helmets are worn, some of which are in poor condition and must be passed from one to another. Unfortunately, the only downside is the extremely poor maintenance of the exterior. After the gate, a path opens up with tall, unkempt grass. A banner has been thrown to the ground and can be walked on. Not a good thing for one of the most important sites in Italy and Europe."
Fran Simon
"The cave is beautiful, and the archaeologist who accompanied us was extremely thorough in his explanations. It was a wonderful feeling to see it again after so many years. It's a site that deserves to be appreciated and made known to the world.
More visits and a museum would truly be a plus for Circeo."
