Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the unique subterranean experience of the Temple of Claudius, praising the serene underground lakes and ancient quarry tunnels. While the historical significance is appreciated, some note that access is limited to guided tours and the above-ground remnants are less substantial. Overall, it's a highly recommended off-the-beaten-path adventure for those seeking a deeper connection with Rome's past.

"The temple of Divine Claudius was a temple in Rome , built on the Caelian in honor of the deified Roman emperor Claudius . It was located on the northern part of the hill, overlooking the valley where the Colosseum would later be built. The northern side consisted of a row of vaulted rooms, in which water pipes flowed, which formed a flat front; at the time of Nero there were fountains, so much so that the remains of one of these, consisting of a prow of a ship with a boar's head , were found in the past (today they are in the Capitoline Museum ). Even under the Flavian dynasty , however, this arrangement remained, although Vespasian reduced the consumption of water by returning it to civilian use.At the moment, the basement is accessed from the western side of the podium. Rodolfo Lanciani was the only one who made an (approximate) plan of the basements. From 2004 to 2006 , the Rome Underground association , on behalf of the Special Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritage of Rome, carried out the new mapping of the undergrounds. The temple stood in a grandiose rectangular platform (180x200 meters), partially artificial and supported by powerful retaining walls, still partially visible: on the southern side they reached 15 m, but the highest side was the northern one.The structure was one of the highest in Rome , 50 m above sea level."

"Not open to the public. Just a closed gate and the lady at the desk for the castle Claudio told us it's never open anymore."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of the Temple of Claudius

The Temple of Claudius was a monumental structure in ancient Rome, dedicated to the deified Emperor Claudius. Construction began under his successor, Nero, and was completed by Vespasian. It was strategically located on the northern part of the Caelian Hill, overlooking the valley where the Colosseum would later be built. The temple was renowned for its grandeur and its innovative engineering, including a massive artificial platform supported by powerful retaining walls that are still partially visible today. Reddit

Beneath the temple, extensive underground quarries were excavated to extract tufo and pozzolana, essential building materials for Rome's vast construction projects. These quarries, some dating back to the 1st century AD, formed a complex network of tunnels and chambers. Over time, these subterranean spaces filled with water, creating the serene, crystal-clear lakes that are a highlight for visitors today. The sheer scale of these excavations speaks to the immense demand for resources in imperial Rome. TikTok+1

While the temple itself is largely in ruins, the subterranean sections offer a remarkably preserved glimpse into Rome's past. The guided tours provide context on the temple's history, the quarrying techniques, and the geological formations. It's an experience that connects visitors directly to the layers of history beneath the modern city, offering a stark contrast to the bustling streets above. TikTok

Exploring the Subterranean Wonders

The most compelling aspect of visiting the Temple of Claudius is the exploration of its underground chambers. These are not typical tourist caves; they are ancient quarries that have been transformed by time and water into a unique subterranean landscape. The serene lakes within these quarries are a breathtaking sight, their clear, often bluish water reflecting the rough-hewn walls of the tunnels. TikTok+1

Access to these areas is exclusively through guided tours, which are essential for understanding the historical significance and navigating the subterranean environment safely. Tour guides often share fascinating details about the extraction of materials like tufo and pozzolana, which were crucial for building many of Rome's iconic structures. They also highlight the geological features and the history of the site from its imperial origins to its more recent rediscovery. TikTok+1

Visitors are advised to wear appropriate footwear as the ground can be uneven and damp. Bringing a flashlight can enhance the experience, though guides are equipped. The atmosphere is one of quiet contemplation, offering a stark contrast to the vibrant energy of Rome above ground. It's an opportunity to step back in time and appreciate the hidden engineering and natural beauty beneath the city. TikTok
