"This is a late 15th-century church situated along Via della Pace and is one of several churches that can be visited in close proximity to the immediate west of Piazza Navona. Opening hours are 9.30am to 6pm daily and entry is free.

Santa Maria della Pace is mainly Baroque in architectural style and features a charming curved portico front and notable Bramante Cloisters. The interior is classically ornate in the manner of Baroque along with Renaissance touches, including Raphael's Chigi Chapel.

There was quite a bit of restoration taking place during our recent visit but it was still nice being able to pop in for a brief look around while works too place to protect and preserve the church."

The Artistic Masterpiece: Raphael's Sibyls

The undisputed star of Santa Maria della Pace is Raphael's fresco of the Four Sibyls, located in the Chigi Chapel. Commissioned by the influential banker Agostino Chigi, this work depicts the Cumaean, Persian, Phrygian, and Tiburtine Sibyls receiving divine inspiration. Raphael's masterful use of color, dynamic composition, and lifelike figures make this fresco a pinnacle of Renaissance art, often compared to his Vatican masterpieces. The chapel itself, designed by Raphael, also features other works by his pupils and a bronze altarpiece by Lorenzetto, creating a cohesive artistic statement. Reddit

Many visitors are struck by the intimacy and accessibility of this artwork. Unlike larger, more crowded museums, here you can often stand close and truly appreciate the detail and genius of Raphael's brushstrokes. The fresco's placement above the chapel's arch adds to its dramatic impact, drawing the viewer's eye upwards in contemplation. Reddit

Beyond the Sibyls, the church houses other significant artworks, including a painting by Orazio Gentileschi, adding further layers of artistic discovery for those who take the time to explore. Reddit

Bramante's Tranquil Cloisters

While the church itself is the primary draw for many, the cloisters provide an essential element of the Santa Maria della Pace experience, embodying the Renaissance ideal of beauty and order. They are a testament to the enduring legacy of Bramante and the artistic spirit of the era. Instagram
