What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unparalleled, breathtaking views of the Roman Forum, especially during sunset, calling it a truly magical experience. The attentive and personable staff often receive high praise for enhancing the dining atmosphere. However, some guests found the prices to be quite high for the food quality, and a few experienced slow service or unresolved issues, leading to a feeling of being a 'tourist trap' for some.
"This review is long overdue, but this was by far the best dining experience I have ever had. My boyfriend and I were in Rome in early August for our 5 year anniversary and we wanted to have a special meal so we picked the Ristorante Roof Garden. We had such an amazing meal and service that evening that we decided to go back again the following night because the food was excellent, the staff was personable and kind, and you simply could not ask for a better view.
We left both nights in awe of the meals and experiences, and I really cannot stress enough just how wonderful the staff is with the guests. We spent at least two hours there for both meals because we loved the ambience and had a wonderful time and the food was perfect.
Federico was very attentive and charming and he made our experience all the more special. Truly a wonderful man exuding positive energy and care for his guests. All of the staff members were very professional and gracious hosts. These meals were experiences we will never forget and when we return to Rome, we will definitely be coming back again as it is our favorite restaurant that we've ever been to!"

"TL;DR: had the prices been lower, we wouldn't have thought twice about giving this restaurant a decent review.
We had a bad experience; it happens-- could've been a fluke, but we communicated our issue to the staff and it went unresolved, so we emailed the restaurant/hotel afterwards, seeking some sorts of concession. After some time of not receiving a response, we wrote a completely fair and factual review on the platform used to make the reservation (which was specifically requested by the platform- we didn't go out seeking to badmouth them) and submitted an inquiry with the AGCM ,(Italian Commerce review board,) hours after which, we received a very rude and disrespectful email from the restaurant accusing us of lying about the situation and suggesting that had we not written a negative review, they might have considered offering a partial refund (in the form of a credit to come back to the restaurant). Simply not what you'd expect from a quality hospitality establishment.
Since we're apparently doubling down here, and Google wants our review, here are the details:
The wait staff were exceptionally courteous and welcoming, and seated us quickly, right by the window. Expectations were set for a wonderful meal. However...
The view was supposedly of the Roman Forum, but it was pitch black out (7:30PM in October) and too brightlyl-lit in the restaurant so you couldn't see anything outside.
Service was extremely slow, despite low crowds and sufficient staffing.
The appetizer we wanted was unavailable so the waiter suggested the special without disclosing the price; it was a buffalo mozzarella dish and apparently €50, twice the price of the option we wanted and an exhorbitant charge for cheese, tomato and a few slices of prosciutto.
After an hour and a half, we asked for the entrees to go because we just wanted to get back to the room and go to bed. They arrived another 30 minutes later, and we asked for the check which took another 15-20 minutes.
The food quality was-- fine. Somewhat bland, and for us, nothing special. Portion sizes were larger than expected, so if you're hungry it will satisfy, but if you're looking for a quality rooftop dinner, with legitimately special views, and an experience that really justifies the prices charged, we'd highly recommend Cielo Rooftop at the Hotel de la Ville in the Piazza di Spagna area. Rooftop Garden just felt like we were tricked into a tourist trap meal, whereas Cielo was a truly special experience."

Yes, many rooftop bars are situated with excellent views of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Look for establishments in hotels or buildings in the Monti district or near Piazza Venezia.
While some are well-marked, others might be tucked away. Look for hotel entrances or signs indicating a rooftop bar or restaurant. Using a map app can help pinpoint their exact locations.
If your hotel is in the historic center, it's very likely you can walk to many rooftop bars. Rome is a very walkable city, and exploring on foot is part of the charm.
To ensure you don't miss the sunset, consider arriving by taxi or a short walk from public transport. This minimizes travel time and stress, allowing you to relax and enjoy the view.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Generally, you do not need to buy separate tickets. Entry is usually free, but you are expected to order drinks or food. Reservations are highly recommended, especially for prime seating.
Most rooftop bars open in the late afternoon, around 4-5 PM, and stay open until midnight or later. Some may also serve breakfast or lunch.
A cover charge is uncommon. The cost is usually reflected in the prices of drinks and food, which are often higher due to the prime location and views.
When booking, you can often request a table with a direct view of the Roman Forum. However, these are the most sought-after spots, so booking well in advance is crucial.
You might be able to get a table if you arrive early or during off-peak times, but it's not guaranteed. Some bars have a standing area for those without reservations.
🎫 🍸 Onsite Experience
Expect a wide range of cocktails, including classic Italian aperitifs like Aperol Spritz and Negroni, as well as wine, beer, and non-alcoholic options.
Food quality can vary. Some offer excellent Italian cuisine, while others might be more focused on drinks and snacks. Reviews suggest some places offer truly memorable meals.
The atmosphere is typically sophisticated and romantic, especially during sunset. It's a great spot for a special occasion or a relaxed evening with stunning scenery.
While some rooftop bars might be more adult-oriented, many are welcoming to families, especially during earlier hours. It's best to check with the specific venue.

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider visiting in the late afternoon to enjoy the views before the evening crowds arrive. This can be a more relaxed experience for children. Some restaurants may have more accommodating seating options. It's always a good idea to call ahead and inquire about their family-friendliness and any specific policies.
💰 Budget Travelers
Alternatively, consider visiting a rooftop bar that is more focused on drinks rather than a full-service restaurant. You can enjoy the view with a single drink and then find more affordable dining options elsewhere in the city. Some reviewers suggest that even a single drink can be worth the splurge for the unforgettable vista.
💖 Couples & Romantic Getaways
Many venues offer special seating for couples and are adept at creating a memorable experience. Booking a table with a direct view and enjoying a leisurely dinner or cocktails as the city lights up is a quintessential Roman romantic experience.

The Allure of the Roman Forum View
This elevated vantage point transforms the experience of visiting Rome. Instead of just seeing the Forum from ground level, you gain an appreciation for its scale and layout. The juxtaposition of ancient stones against the modern cityscape, all enjoyed with a cocktail in hand, creates an unforgettable ambiance. It's a moment of reflection and awe, making the visit feel truly special.
When choosing a rooftop bar, prioritize those that explicitly mention a direct view of the Roman Forum. While many offer city views, the specific vista of the Forum is what sets these establishments apart. Reviews often emphasize how this view elevates the entire dining or drinking experience, making it a highlight of a Roman holiday.
Dining and Drinks: Beyond the View
Cocktails are another major draw. Expect a sophisticated bar menu featuring Italian aperitifs such as Aperol Spritz and Negroni, alongside a selection of wines and other spirits. The experience of sipping a well-crafted drink while overlooking ancient ruins is a quintessential Roman indulgence. Many TikTok videos showcase the stylish presentation of these beverages, adding to the allure.
However, it's important to manage expectations regarding price. The prime location and exclusive views mean that both food and drinks are typically priced at a premium. Some reviews mention that while the experience is wonderful, the cost can be substantial, and it's advisable to check menus beforehand. For those seeking a truly special occasion, the combination of great food, drinks, and an unparalleled view can justify the expense.
Navigating Reservations and Dress Codes
When it comes to attire, most rooftop bars and restaurants in Rome adopt a smart-casual dress code. This generally means avoiding overly casual wear like shorts, flip-flops, or athletic gear. Opt for stylish yet comfortable clothing, such as dresses, skirts, smart trousers, or collared shirts. This ensures you fit in with the sophisticated ambiance and are welcomed by the venue.
Some reviews suggest that while walk-ins might be accommodated during less busy times, relying on this can lead to disappointment. Having a reservation not only guarantees entry but also often allows you to request a specific table or area, maximizing your enjoyment of the view and the overall experience.
