"A great discovery, just as we were passing by and had to kill some time. A collector of another era donated this private house with his collection to the city, the ambients are small and cozy, one has the impression one could be living in this urban patrician villa! Interesting underground section."

HERM PAZ

"This museum has a great potential, I enjoyed the visit in the underground Roman domus, the staff was really nice and ready to help the visitors, I appresciated the Li-Fi tour guide on the app, but I think the whole visit could be improved: the iron walking path in the domus covered a big section of the amazing colorfull Roman floor, maybe with a glass platform the visitors would be able to admire the whole floor which could be just seen in the picture on the screen. Using an audioguide could be more engaging for the visitors in order to fully enjoy the fascinating atmosphere in the domus. Great potential!!"

Unearthing Rome's Past: The Underground Roman Domus

One of the most captivating aspects of the Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco is its underground Roman domus. Discovered beneath the museum, this archaeological site offers a rare and direct connection to ancient Roman life. Visitors descend into a preserved section of a 4th-century Roman house, revealing its layout, architectural features, and even remnants of its original decoration. It’s a tangible piece of history, allowing you to walk through the spaces where Romans lived centuries ago. TikTokReddit

The experience of exploring the domus is both educational and evocative. While the current infrastructure, like the iron walkways, allows access, some visitors have suggested improvements such as glass flooring to better reveal the original mosaic floors. Despite these suggestions, the domus remains a powerful reminder of Rome's layered history, with the modern city built directly atop its ancient foundations. The Li-Fi tour guide available via an app can significantly enhance understanding and appreciation of this unique subterranean world. Reddit

Visiting the Roman domus provides a stark contrast to the sculptures above ground. It shifts the focus from artistic creation to daily existence, offering a more grounded perspective on the ancient world. It’s a testament to the ongoing discoveries in Rome and a highlight for those interested in archaeology and the tangible remnants of history. TikTok
