Pt.2 of Roman Emperor Augustus’ home - the tiny scenes of ancient Roman women really got me 🥲 Such a privilege to explore it all by ourselves. Here we can see the private ramp to a temple on the hill, a grand hall, and a private ‘bedroom’. Go to my other videos to see inside the private rooms of his domus (house). #ancientrome #romanempire #archaeology #history #romanemperor #historian #archaeol...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the House of Augustus as a must-see for history lovers, offering a stunning glimpse into imperial Roman life with remarkably preserved frescoes. While the area is relatively small, the 'Super Sites' ticket is essential and should be booked in advance. Some find it difficult to access without a guide, but the experience is considered well worth the effort for its historical and artistic value.

"Certainly one of the must-see locations in the Palatine Hill for history lovers. While the area was relatively small, it’s still an incredible area to explore. In order to visit you’ll need Super Sites access."

"This is probably the best example of an Imperial Roman Villa we have ever found. You can access it only with a 'Super Site' ticket which is bought as an upgrade to the Forum ticket, but the $$ is not much.
There are numerous painted rooms, but the last ones that have been restored will leave you amazed. Some rooms are protected by glass and in a controlled atmosphere, in others you can go inside and admire original colors that look fairly freshly painted.
In addition to the interior of the Villa, there are the outbuildings like baths, & storage. (I was impressed with the ancient plumbing arrangements on display as much as anything . . )
Courteous, attentive and prepared staff are there also to answer your questions or you can sit down & watch the introductory video. This Villa complex should stay on your wish list if you're in Roma. . ."

Stephen Mitchell

"Truly stunning. Difficult to access. Don’t forget to check out what is meant to be the site of Romulus and Remus’s first house.

Rather than try and access the site directly, as we failed to do on a previous visit, this time I hired a local guide for a more personal experience. Every official tour guide in Rome has a licence and is qualified. You really do need a guide to understand the House of Augustus and the Palatine, if you want to get the most out of your visit."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Imperial Residence of Augustus

The House of Augustus (Domus Augusti) on the Palatine Hill was the private residence of Rome's first emperor, Augustus. Built starting in 30 BC, it was strategically located to offer commanding views and proximity to the heart of Roman power. Augustus himself lived here for over 40 years, transforming it from a modest dwelling into a more elaborate complex that set the standard for imperial residences. TikTok+1

This site offers a rare opportunity to step into the private world of an emperor. Unlike the grand public buildings, the Domus Augusti provides intimate insights into domestic life, political dealings, and the personal tastes of one of history's most influential figures. The architecture and surviving decorations speak volumes about the wealth, power, and artistic sensibilities of the Augustan age. TikTok+1

While much of the original structure has been lost to time and subsequent construction, significant portions have been excavated and restored. Visitors can explore rooms that served as bedrooms, reception areas, and even party rooms, adorned with stunning frescoes that have captivated archaeologists and tourists alike. The preservation efforts, including controlled atmospheres for some delicate artworks, ensure that the legacy of Augustus's home can be appreciated by future generations. TikTokReddit

Art and Architecture: A Glimpse into Augustan Rome

The frescoes within the House of Augustus are its most striking feature, offering a vivid window into Roman art and decoration. The 'Room of the Masks' is particularly renowned for its trompe-l'oeil depictions of theatrical masks, creating an illusion of depth and drama. Other rooms feature intricate mythological scenes, delicate floral motifs, and geometric patterns, showcasing the sophisticated artistic tastes of the era. TikTok+1

The architectural design of the Domus Augusti reflects a blend of functionality and luxury. It included private apartments, reception halls, and courtyards, all designed to accommodate the emperor's personal life and his public duties. Evidence of advanced ancient Roman engineering, such as sophisticated plumbing systems, can also be observed in the outbuildings, highlighting the practical ingenuity of the time. Reddit

Preservation has been key to appreciating these ancient wonders. Some of the most delicate frescoes are protected by glass and maintained in controlled environments to prevent further deterioration. This allows visitors to witness colors that, in many cases, appear remarkably vibrant and almost freshly painted, offering a powerful connection to the past. TikTokReddit
