Visitors find Ponte di Roana a historically significant and visually interesting structure, especially when exploring the Assa Valley's unique graffiti. However, the road conditions leading to and around the bridge are a significant concern for cyclists and motorcyclists, impacting the overall experience.

"Really Cool Ole Bridge, worth the visit"

Steven Toner

"The construction of the first bridge connecting Roana to Canove, spanning two banks of the Assa Valley along the road from Asiago to Roana, dates back to 1906. During the First World War, the Sette Comuni Plateau found itself on the front line, and during the Italian retreat on May 22, 1916, even though the surrounding villages had not yet been completely evacuated, the bridge was blown up. It was 135 meters long, 80 meters high, and constructed with two entirely stone piers supporting a large steel lattice girder. Before its destruction, flying ace Arturo Ferrarin flew under the arch several times in his plane. The current bridge was rebuilt in reinforced concrete with three arches and inaugurated in 1924. It was restored in 1933 and is still open to traffic in both directions."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Bridge's Storied Past

Ponte di Roana, or the Roana Bridge, is more than just a crossing; it's a symbol of resilience. The original structure, a magnificent 135-meter-long steel lattice girder bridge built in 1906, was a vital link between Roana and Canove. Its height of 80 meters was impressive for its time. Tragically, during World War I, on May 22, 1916, as Italian forces retreated, the bridge was deliberately blown up. It's even rumored that the famous aviator Arturo Ferrarin flew his plane under its arch multiple times before its destruction. Reddit

The current bridge, a more robust reinforced concrete structure with three arches, was inaugurated in 1924, a testament to the region's determination to rebuild. It underwent restoration in 1933 and remains open to traffic today. The story of its construction is also tied to the tenacity of a local woman who sought a more convenient connection to Asiago, highlighting the bridge's importance to daily life in the early 20th century. Exploring the Assa Valley

For those seeking a deeper connection to the area's history and a unique visual experience, descending into the Assa Valley is highly recommended. This valley floor is known for its intriguing graffiti, adding an artistic and somewhat mysterious layer to the landscape. It's a place that requires a bit more effort to explore, as one reviewer noted it's 'not at all comfortable' to navigate. Reddit

Visiting the Assa Valley graffiti offers a different perspective than simply viewing the bridge from above. It allows for a more intimate encounter with the natural environment and the human stories etched into its walls. Be prepared for a more rugged terrain if you choose to explore the valley floor, and ensure you have appropriate footwear and are mindful of your surroundings. Reddit
