What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Batteria di Mezzo Monte Brione for its absolutely fabulous and amazing views over Lake Garda and the surrounding mountains. The historical significance as a WWI fort is also a major draw, with many appreciating the free entry and the well-preserved remnants. However, some find the climb strenuous due to uneven steps, and note a lack of detailed information within the fort itself.
"We have visited this Fort numerous times over the last 20 years. It is a great place to visit as the views over the north end of Lago di Garda and the surrounding mountains are fabulous. You can approach the Forte using steps that lead up from Porto San Nicolo or, from the road that winds up through the olive groves starting in San Alesandro.
When you reach the forte it is very clear why it was built in this location - it commands the north end of the lake giving cover to Passo San Giovani to the east. Strategically it was very important for the Austrians during WW1 protecting the Austro Hungarian border. The buildings are resisting time and weather well and it is possible to go inside if you visit on the right days.
The trail past the Forte follows the cliff edge and descends past gun emplacements and track ways that allowed munitions to be transported up to the Forte.
The steps are not regular in size or height which makes the climb up or down quite hard work. If you are not sure of your footing, take walking poles and definitely wear enclosed shoes. It may be hard work for some, but the climb is definitely worth it for the views alone."
