"Always a great hotel"
Francesco Saccaggi
"The Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, built in the 13th century, was the seat of several government offices. Over the centuries, its purpose and function changed; in the 16th century, it was transformed into the Ospizio del Cappello Rosso (Red Hat Hospice); in 1913, it became the Post Office. The façade retains its dovetail battlements, the mullioned windows on the main floor, and other decorations in the vast interior hall, depicting heraldic shields and the heads of saints and bishops."
Fiorentino Stornaiuolo
"Walking through the historic center, it's impossible not to stumble upon the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. I'll include some historical information. Built in 1280 as the seat of the Capitano del Popolo (a government function alongside the Podestà), it was restored in 1432 and, after its original function ceased, also served the Este family, who governed the city. In 1515, the palace was transformed into the Ospizio del Cappello Rosso (Red Hat Hospice), which also occupied the adjacent building; in 1913, the Hospice underwent a modernization and became the Albergo della Posta (Post Office). In 1920, while the façade was being renovated, important traces of the original facade were discovered, and these elements were used for a reconstruction in the same style, completed in 1929. The façades overlooking Via Emilia and the square feature the coats of arms of the Captains and the Community, heavily repainted over the ancient remains or created from scratch. The vast interior hall (Hall of the Defenders), which served as the community council chamber, has been restored with the reconstruction of the exposed truss ceiling and the recovery of the surviving decorations (some heavily retouched), depicting heraldic shields and heads of saints (14th century).
It is the most characteristic building in the heart of the city, long involved in the historical, artistic, and political events of Reggio."
