"I've been taking my students to the Metastasio Theater for over twelve years, and I've seen many shows during that time. The theater offers schools the opportunity to spend a "normal" evening, immersing students, usually reluctant and wary, in a truly adult experience, breathing in the city and its history, and all at affordable prices. I believe this civic and educational function is a fundamental element that distinguishes the commitment and passion of those who keep this great Prato institution alive.
The theater has evolved over time: perhaps you'll find slightly fewer classics on the program, but many interesting shows. This year, for example, opened with an international premiere, featuring a play by Alexander Zeldin, one of the most important voices on the current British scene. This alone would be enough to classify the Metastasio Theater as a rare place in Italy: open and up-to-date on current events and innovations both in Italy and abroad, just as theater is conceived abroad, especially in England. In short, in recent years, we've been increasingly lacking the Goldonis, Pirandellos, De Filippos, and Shakespeares—authors an audience would expect to see performed—but there's a vibrant theater abound, made up of authors and professionals who offer (even against the initial doubts stemming from my own ignorance) brilliant, intelligent, fresh, and almost always surprising performances. And when I see the young people leaving the foyer, moved, I believe this impression isn't just mine."
