Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Santa Maria di Portonovo for its unique Romanesque architecture and its breathtaking location overlooking Portonovo Bay. The serene, meditative atmosphere inside the church is frequently highlighted as a major draw. However, the limited opening hours and challenging, expensive parking are common points of dissatisfaction.

"I love this church, simple White and beautiful ❤"

Tara Wang

"What remains of the church today is actually part of the remains of an ancient Benedictine abbey built at the beginning of the year 1000. Inside, despite the centuries that have passed, you can still feel a secluded and meditative atmosphere.

Santa Maria di Portonovo is a jewel of Romanesque architecture that is unique not only in the Marche and the Riviera del Conero, but in the entire peninsula: only in Corsica and Normandy can you find equally significant examples.

Today it is only possible to visit it on weekends and only in the afternoon.
Some restoration work on the outside still exists.

It is not easy to find parking nearby because the little that there is is granted to the beaches (which obviously do not give discounts), only for the whole day (at €15)."

Marco Polo per un giorno

"Very beautiful medieval church, with 5 naves, well preserved even if completely bare inside.
Closed for a long time, it was recently reopened (at set times) thanks to the commitment of the FAI.
There is also a guide who explains the historical and artistic side, very informed and competent.
Immersed in the greenery of the Conero Park, but still surrounded by the fabulous beach of Portonovo"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Enduring Charm of Romanesque Architecture

Santa Maria di Portonovo is a remarkable testament to Romanesque architecture, a style that flourished in Europe from the 10th to the 12th centuries. Its design is characterized by its massive quality, thick walls, round arches, sturdy pillars, and large towers. The church's interior, though bare, emphasizes these structural elements, creating a sense of solidity and timelessness. Unlike later Gothic styles that aimed for height and light, Romanesque architecture often evokes a feeling of groundedness and introspection. The five-nave layout is a significant feature, allowing for a grand yet intimate space that has withstood the test of centuries. Reddit

This architectural style is relatively rare in Italy, making Santa Maria di Portonovo a particularly valuable find. Its preservation is a testament to the efforts of organizations like the FAI, who recognize its historical and artistic importance. Visitors often remark on the secluded and meditative atmosphere within the church, a quality directly linked to its architectural design and its historical role as part of a Benedictine abbey. Reddit

The church's exterior also complements its historical significance, offering stunning views of Portonovo Bay. This juxtaposition of ancient architecture with the natural beauty of the Conero coast is a key part of its appeal. The simple white stone against the blue sea creates a visually striking scene, often captured in drone footage and photography. TikTok

Navigating Portonovo: Parking and Access

Visiting Santa Maria di Portonovo comes with a common challenge: parking. The area around Portonovo Bay is popular, especially during the summer, and parking spaces are scarce and can be quite expensive, with reports of daily rates around €15. This often means visitors need to arrive very early in the day to secure a spot or be prepared for a walk from further afield. Reddit

This parking situation can be a deterrent for some, but many visitors find the experience of reaching the church and enjoying the surrounding bay worth the effort. The advice from travelers often centers on planning ahead. Checking local parking availability or considering alternative transport options like local buses (if available) can alleviate some of the stress. Reddit

Despite the parking hurdles, the accessibility of the church itself, once you're in the vicinity, is generally good. The FAI's involvement ensures the site is maintained and accessible during its limited opening hours. The reward for navigating the access challenges is the opportunity to experience a unique historical and architectural gem in a breathtaking natural setting. Reddit
