What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the Santissima Trinità churches for their stunning, often hidden, artistic interiors, including beautiful frescoes and valuable icons. The unique octagonal architecture is also frequently highlighted as a point of interest. However, some visitors have encountered issues with churches being unexpectedly closed, emphasizing the need to verify opening hours in advance.
"Absolutely beautiful interior!"
Hans Lind
"Found Closed
Upon arriving in the city, we parked for free on Viale delle Grazie next to the church. Located along the Noncello River, the octagonal church contains 16th-century frescoes by Giovanni Maria Calderari, a student of Pordenone. Unfortunately, we found it closed, but the interior is also worth seeing.
Hello, Roby and Lucy from Sant'Anastasia (Naples)"
ROBERTO RIVIECCIO
"A small, rarely visited church "on the other side of the Noncello," yet a true treasure trove of minor art, not as precious as the Sistine Chapel, but certainly equally valuable and a pleasant surprise for those who enjoy seeking out hidden artistic treasures. Known as the Church of the Santissima, it has an octagonal floor plan, as does the bell tower, which is octagonal like the sanctuary of Cordovado.
The church was built in 1526-39 by Pre' Ippolito Morone; the interior was frescoed with a masterly hand by Giovanni Maria Zaffoni, known as Calderari, Pordenone's principal pupil.
Used by the Romanian Orthodox Church, as is easily seen from the many icons present, the traditional Catholic rite, in Latin, is celebrated on Sunday afternoons."

Architectural Uniqueness
This architectural choice is not merely aesthetic; it can also have symbolic religious significance, often relating to themes of rebirth or perfection in Christian symbolism. The pyramidal roof mentioned in relation to some octagonal churches further adds to their unique silhouette against the skyline. Appreciating these less common architectural elements offers a deeper understanding of the building's design intent.
When exploring, take a moment to consider how the shape of the building influences the acoustics and the overall spiritual experience. The interplay of light and space within an octagonal structure can be particularly captivating. :building_construction:
Echoes of History and Faith
Other locations, like the Santissima Trinità in Potenza, have been the site of profound and tragic events, such as the hiding of Elisa Claps' body for 17 years. These churches, therefore, become not only places of worship but also sites of remembrance and reflection on complex human stories. The palpable sense of history can be deeply moving.
For those interested in religious traditions, some Santissima Trinità churches are known for preserving traditional Catholic rites in Latin, including Gregorian chant, and may also host services for other Christian denominations, such as the Romanian Orthodox Church. This diversity in religious practice adds to the cultural tapestry of these sacred spaces.
