"Have to give it a 5 star rating just because of the story behind the church and in fact its position on the beach and built into the rocks. It is not your standard church visit but you get these sculptures all in the rocks behind the church facade. Read the story behind the church from the sign, which is In Italian and English, and you will get a better understanding of its history.
It is a walk down and up again, so be prepared. It is only a 10 min visit to see it all. There is as an entry charge of 5€, which can be paid by card. It is a small price to pay to ensure it continues to exist.
We had no problem parking as we are traveling on bicycles 😀."

The Fascinating History of Chiesa di Piedigrotta
The church as it appears today is largely the work of local sculptors, Angelo and Alfonso Barone, who, along with others, continued to expand and embellish the cave over the 19th and 20th centuries. They meticulously carved figures from the living rock, creating a unique museum of religious art within the natural grotto. This dedication to transforming a simple cave into a sacred space is what makes Piedigrotta so compelling.
Visitors are often struck by the blend of natural beauty and human artistry. The sound of the waves crashing nearby adds a unique ambiance to the experience. The story behind its creation, coupled with the visual spectacle of the carved figures, makes it a truly memorable stop for anyone exploring the Calabrian coast.
Experiencing Piedigrotta Beach
Many visitors find the combination of the beach and the church to be magical. The proximity of the sacred site to the natural beauty of the sea creates a unique atmosphere. It's an ideal location for a short visit that combines cultural exploration with relaxation.
While the church is the main draw, don't underestimate the charm of the beach itself. It provides a beautiful contrast to the intricate carvings within the cave and offers a perfect spot to reflect on the history and artistry you've just witnessed.
