"What is striking about the church of San Paolo in Pistoia is the profound architectural dissonance between its façade and its interior structure.
This divergence is certainly attributable to natural events and human decisions that radically altered the original layout of the religious building.
It is therefore essential to admire the medieval structure of San Paolo, particularly its splendid façade, characterized by a pointed tympanum containing a faux rose window, and embellished in the lower section by two overlapping loggias of different sizes.
The marble portal is the highlight of the façade and is surmounted by a tympanum embellished with a splendid rose window. At its base is a pointed archivolt, whose lunette is adorned with a small statue of Saint Paul, flanked by two flying angels.
The interior, with a single nave, reflects the changes made over time, which have altered the original architectural structure.
Nonetheless, the artistic value of the panels placed in the respective altars is undisputed.
The Sacred Conversation by Fra Paolino is an absolute pictorial masterpiece, due to the formal perfection of the composition, in which the monk Savonarola is said to be hidden in the figure of Saint Peter.
The two frescoed figures of Saint Agatha and Saint Eulalia by Gerino da Pistoia, decorated within their respective niches on the right side of the nave, embody the refined, delicate touch of the Pistoian artist.
The beautiful painting depicting a luminous Christ in glory reclining on a cloud, with Saint Cajetan of Thiene depicted below, is attributed to a Neapolitan painter, De Matteis.
Other splendid panels, among which the austere composure of Vite's Madonna of Humility shines forth, enrich the church's artistic heritage."
