Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Leaning Tower of Pisa as an iconic and impressive landmark, with many finding the climb to the top a unique and worthwhile experience offering stunning views. The surrounding Piazza dei Miracoli is also lauded for its beauty and historical significance. Some travelers note that parking can be difficult and suggest booking tickets in advance to avoid queues.

"The Tower of Pisa is definitely worth a visit! The iconic leaning structure is fascinating, and it’s amazing to see how the building stands despite its tilt—it truly feels like a wonder of architecture. The area outside is open 24 hours, so you can take photos from almost any angle. There’s also a beautiful lawn where you can relax and enjoy the view, although access may vary at times. Even just walking around and admiring the tower, along with the nearby Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery, makes for a memorable experience. A must-visit landmark when in Pisa!"

"The Highlight in Tuscany

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is truly an impressive building and definitely worth a visit. The entire area surrounding the tower, including the cathedral and baptistery, is beautifully designed. The attractions are lovingly maintained and offer great photo opportunities.

Pets are also allowed on the grounds, which is certainly not a given and a nice bonus, especially for pet owners. However, it would be desirable to have more opportunities to stay in the shade. Especially on hot days, shady areas are really important for tourists, children, the elderly, and of course, the animals.

If you're traveling with children or dogs, be sure to bring plenty of water and a hat or portable umbrella.
The public restrooms are worth mentioning, as they are clean and easily accessible.
The only downside: The parking situation around the tower isn't ideal. Parking spaces are scarce and usually subject to a fee. Therefore, I recommend using public transportation whenever possible; it saves time and stress.

We had a wonderful day there and can highly recommend the visit to everyone.
If you're in the area, you shouldn't miss this world-famous landmark! 🫶"

"Visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa was an unforgettable experience and well worth the trip! Pisa itself is a charming, small town, and we made the drive specifically to see the famous tower and it did not disappoint.
We purchased our tickets online ahead of time, I think they were a timed ticket and it was $42 which made things super easy and fast. We arrived first thing in the morning and only waited about 10 minutes to get in. They provide lockers for your belongings since you’re not allowed to bring bags or loose items inside, which was convenient and secure.
Climbing to the top is an adventure in itself! The stairway is extremely narrow and leans with the tower, which can feel disorienting at times. If you are claustrophobic, have breathing difficulties, or struggle with steep stairs, this might be a bit challenging. That said, making it to the top is completely worth it the view is incredible, and there’s something surreal about standing at the top of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.

It was rainy the day we went, but only scattered showers, so it didn’t interfere with our experience too much. We even grabbed some sweaters from the gift shop nearby so we wouldn’t get wet. After climbing and taking in the view, we had fun taking the famous “pushing the tower” photos outside something you can’t leave Pisa without doing!
The whole experience felt like stepping into a postcard from my childhood finally seeing in person what I had only ever read about or seen in photos. If you’re traveling in Italy, this is an absolute must see bucket list stop!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Engineering Marvel: Why Does it Lean?

The Leaning Tower of Pisa's famous tilt is not a design flaw but a consequence of its foundation. Construction began in 1173, and by the time the third story was completed in 1178, the soft, unstable subsoil of clay, sand, and shells began to give way under the immense weight of the marble structure. The tower started to sink on one side, causing the lean. TikTok+3

Over the centuries, engineers have undertaken numerous stabilization projects to prevent the tower from collapsing. The most significant efforts occurred in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, where soil was carefully removed from beneath the raised side, gradually reducing the lean from nearly 6 degrees to around 4 degrees. This intervention has significantly improved its stability, ensuring the tower can be enjoyed for generations to come. TikTokInstagram

Despite its precarious angle, the Leaning Tower of Pisa stands as a testament to both architectural ambition and the unpredictable forces of nature. Its enduring lean has transformed it from a potential engineering failure into one of the world's most recognizable and beloved landmarks. TikTok+1

Capturing the Perfect Pisa Pose

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a playground for creative photography. The most iconic pose involves visitors pretending to push the tower over or hold it up. This 'forced perspective' shot is a rite of passage for many tourists and can lead to hilarious and memorable photos. TikTokInstagram+2

To achieve the best results, position yourself a good distance away from the tower. Experiment with different arm angles and expressions. The key is to have your subject (the person posing) stand in the foreground, while the tower is in the background, creating the illusion of interaction. TikTokInstagram

Beyond the classic pose, explore different angles and perspectives. Consider capturing the tower against the sky, focusing on its intricate details, or including the surrounding Piazza dei Miracoli in your shots. Early mornings or late afternoons offer softer light and fewer crowds, making it easier to get that perfect, unobstructed photo. TikTokInstagram

A Visit to the Piazza dei Miracoli

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the star attraction, but it's part of a larger, magnificent complex known as the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles). This UNESCO World Heritage site also includes the Pisa Cathedral (Duomo), the Baptistery, and the Camposanto Monumentale (monumental cemetery). Reddit

The Cathedral, a stunning example of Romanesque architecture, was built starting in the 11th century. Adjacent to it is the Baptistery, the largest in Italy, known for its impressive acoustics. The Camposanto Monumentale, a cloistered cemetery, is adorned with beautiful frescoes and houses ancient Roman sarcophagi. Reddit

Together, these structures create a breathtaking ensemble of medieval art and architecture. Visitors are encouraged to explore all the monuments to fully appreciate the historical and artistic significance of the Piazza dei Miracoli. TikTokReddit
