Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Basilica of San Frediano to be an interesting and historically rich site, particularly noted for its unique confessionals and the preserved body of Saint Zita. While the lack of English information can be a drawback for some, the ancient architecture and spiritual atmosphere are highly appreciated. The church's active community, especially the student choir, adds to its vibrant presence.

"Interesting spot. The confessional are quite different to anything I have ever seen before. The one confessional has quite a vivid sculpture (I am not sure if that's the correct way to describe it) with lots of references to death. Unfortunately, there was nothing in English to learn more about it."

Leslie Shoemaker

"The beginning of its construction dates back to the 11th century and was originally dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, bishop and Roman soldier. Attached to the Church there was also a hospital to accommodate pilgrims and the indigent. Both, church and hospital, were managed by the Camaldolese from 1076 to 1561, the year in which the military Order of the Knights of Saint Stephen took over. It was in this period that the cross of the order was affixed to the façade, having been removed during a restoration in the second half of the twentieth century."
