"Nice church"

KK

"The Church of Santa Teresa is located on Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Piacenza, one of its main shopping streets. It is therefore easily accessible. It is a splendid Baroque building dating back to 1650. Built by the Discalced Carmelites, it represents an example of Baroque pictorial decoration. Worth seeing are the chapels decorated with frescoes by the Cremonese painters, the Natali brothers. A church to discover and admire..."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Bernini's 'Ecstasy of Saint Teresa': A Baroque Marvel

The undisputed star of the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Vittoria is Gian Lorenzo Bernini's 'Ecstasy of Saint Teresa'. Created between 1647 and 1652, this sculptural group is a quintessential example of Baroque art, capturing a moment of intense spiritual and physical rapture. Bernini masterfully uses marble to convey the saint's ecstatic vision, with the angel poised to pierce her heart with a divine arrow. The entire Cornaro Chapel is designed as a theatrical setting, complete with sculpted figures of the Cornaro family members observing the miracle from opera boxes, adding a unique layer of drama and realism. Instagram+3

Visitors often describe the experience of seeing the sculpture as deeply moving and awe-inspiring. The dynamic composition, the play of light and shadow on the marble, and the emotional intensity of Saint Teresa's expression all contribute to its powerful impact. It's a piece that truly comes alive, inviting viewers to contemplate the mystical experience it depicts. Instagram

Beyond the central sculpture, the chapel itself is a work of art, with frescoes and architectural elements that complement Bernini's masterpiece. It's a testament to the Baroque era's ability to blend sculpture, architecture, and painting into a unified, dramatic whole.

Exploring the Baroque Interior

While Bernini's sculpture is the main draw, the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Vittoria itself is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture and art. The church, originally dedicated to Saint Paul, was later renamed in honor of Saint Teresa of Ávila. Its facade, though relatively simple, hints at the richness within. Instagram

Inside, you'll find a single nave adorned with chapels on each side, featuring frescoes and paintings by notable artists. The ribbed vaults are decorated with paintings by Luciano Ricchetti, and the chapels showcase works by artists like Francesco Natali, Sebastiano Galeotti, and Robert De Longe. The high altar, designed by Gabriele Longhi, adds to the church's artistic splendor. Reddit

Take your time to wander through the church and appreciate the details in each chapel. The illusionistic architecture and allegorical figures create a rich visual experience, offering a glimpse into the artistic trends of the 17th and 18th centuries in Rome. Reddit
