"Via di Francesco in Perugia – A Path Through Time and Memory

The Via di Francesco in Perugia is more than just a path – it is a connection between past and present, between spiritual tradition and personal memory. When I walked it almost daily during my studies in 1979, it was a familiar passage for me, leading me through the old town. In November 2024, I returned and experienced this path with new eyes – yet as familiar as ever.

The route, which follows in the footsteps of Saint Francis, leads through Perugia's winding alleys, past impressive medieval architecture, small churches, and quiet squares. It is not only a pilgrimage route, but also a reflection of the city's history. Then as now, I was fascinated by the atmosphere: the warm light refracting off the ancient stones, the narrow passages that suddenly reveal sweeping views over the Umbrian hills.

During my return to Perugia, I was particularly struck by the continuity of this place. Despite the decades that had passed, little seemed to have changed. The sounds, the smells, the feel of the city – they reminded me of my student years. At the same time, I experienced the Via di Francesco more consciously this time, aware of the historical and cultural layers that overlap here.

Anyone visiting Perugia should not miss this path. It is not only a historical route, but also a place for reflection – be it about one's own life, about the city's past, or about the quiet power of a path that generations before and after us will walk."
