• Construction began in 1566 during the reign of the Farnese dynasty. The church was built on the site of a former Franciscan monastery, demolished by Duke Pier Luigi Farnese as part of the fortified city.
• Designed by architect Gian Battista Fornovo, the building is characterized by an oval plan with ten apses arranged radially (five on each side).
• The interior combines elliptical and straight shapes, divided by Corinthian pilasters and ten side chapels.

🎨 Decoration and Artwork
• The chancel features a fresco of Samuel anointing David as king by Giulio Orlandini, dating from around 1628, surrounded by scenes of David defeating Goliath and David's triumph.
• In the central dome, completed between 1626 and 1629, Pier Antonio Bernabei and his students created a beautiful fresco depicting the Holy Trinity, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and a host of saints and angels.
• The chapels contain works by 19th- and 18th-century artists: Tommaso Bandini, Giovanni Gaibazzi, Francesco Scaramuzza (including the Presentation scene in the Temple), Francesco Pescatori, and Sebastiano Galeotti's work with Bonaventure before Mary; in the presbytery, an altarpiece—a copy by Zaganelli (original from 1518)—was created by Antonio Brianti."

Architectural Marvel: The Oval Design

The Church of Santissima Annunziata in Parma is a testament to innovative architectural thinking, particularly evident in its striking oval plan. Unlike the more common longitudinal basilicas, this church features a central oval space from which ten apses radiate outwards. This design, conceived by architect Gian Battista Fornovo, creates a dynamic and immersive interior experience. The interplay of elliptical and straight shapes, enhanced by Corinthian pilasters, guides the eye and emphasizes the church's unique spatial qualities. InstagramReddit

This departure from traditional church layouts reflects the Mannerist period's interest in complex forms and spatial experimentation. The radial arrangement of the apses not only adds visual interest but also contributes to a sense of unified focus towards the central altar area. Visitors often remark on the church's 'real aura and splendour,' which is undoubtedly amplified by this unconventional yet harmonious architectural structure. Reddit

When visiting, take a moment to stand in the center and observe how the architecture draws your attention. The proportions and perspective are key elements that social media creators often highlight, encouraging visitors to look up and around to fully grasp the genius of the design. Instagram+1

Artistic Treasures Within

Beyond its architectural significance, Santissima Annunziata is adorned with significant artworks that enrich its spiritual and aesthetic appeal. The chancel features a captivating fresco by Giulio Orlandini, depicting Samuel anointing David as king, flanked by scenes of David's military victories. This work, dating from around 1628, is a prime example of the period's narrative fresco style. Reddit

The central dome is a masterpiece of Baroque art, painted between 1626 and 1629 by Pier Antonio Bernabei and his collaborators. The fresco depicts the Holy Trinity, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and a celestial host of saints and angels, creating a breathtaking spectacle of divine glory. Reddit The ten side chapels also house a collection of works by various 18th- and 19th-century artists, including pieces by Tommaso Bandini, Giovanni Gaibazzi, Francesco Scaramuzza, Francesco Pescatori, and Sebastiano Galeotti. Reddit

These artistic elements, from the grand dome to the individual chapel altarpieces, contribute to the church's overall 'splendour.' Visitors are encouraged to explore each chapel to discover the diverse artistic contributions and appreciate the layers of history and devotion embedded within the church's walls. Reddit
