What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The RISO Museum of Contemporary Art in Palermo offers a unique experience, primarily due to its stunning 18th-century palace setting. While the architecture is widely praised, opinions on the contemporary art collection are divided, with some finding it underwhelming for the price, while others appreciate the temporary exhibitions. It's a destination that blends historical grandeur with modern artistic expression.
"If you're into actual contemporary art and are in the city, it's worth a visit. The temporary exhibit included some notable international artists. Plus, it's cool seeing art in an old palace!"
Suji Kanneganti
"There are a lot of paintings to see on the first and second floor. The natural part on the ground floor is all under construction, so you cannot see anything. Overall the €8 ticket is a bit pricey."

"Perhaps The West is lost after all 😱. I need a drink.
Post to illustrate the sheer awfulness of this taxpayer-funded museum. Glorious palace building with C-list content. Not worth the 7 Euros. Don’t go.
Palermo is choc-a-bloc with old crumbling noble palaces. Quite a few are restored by government with buckets of taxpayers money. Then the state museum struggles to fill it up. It never occurs to them instead to incentivise the private sector - or indeed the extant noble owners - by deregulating and tax credits and keeping the state nannies at bay.
Take this one. Building and location are to die for. The Region of Sicily then renovated the ruin, and opened it as a contemporary art museum. The art content is so awful (compared with similar museums elsewhere in the world). This one also boasts two colossal courtyards, ideally suited for statutes. Instead, they harbour a circle of rocks which are not abandoned building materials, an upside down tree in rubbish bags, wasteland, and of course a pile of garbage (last photos) (it wouldn’t be Palermo without).
Nobody goes. The eight or so staff play with their phones. Hard pass 👎 2/10"

The Palace: A Masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque
While the palace itself is a testament to Sicilian Baroque splendor, some reviews point out that certain areas, like the ground floor, have been under construction, limiting access to parts of the building. Despite this, the overall impression of the palace is one of awe and historical significance. It's a prime example of how historical structures can be repurposed to house modern cultural institutions, offering a distinct atmosphere that sets it apart from purpose-built galleries.
When exploring the museum, take time to appreciate the details of the palace's design. The interplay of light and shadow within its halls, the scale of its rooms, and the historical context all contribute to a memorable visit. Even if the contemporary art collection doesn't fully resonate with every visitor, the sheer beauty and grandeur of the Palazzo Belmonte Riso make it a worthwhile destination.
Navigating the Art Collection: Mixed Reviews
However, a recurring positive note is the quality and interest of the temporary exhibitions. These often feature notable international artists and diverse themes, which many visitors find to be the highlight of their visit. If you're planning a trip, researching the current temporary exhibition is highly recommended, as it seems to be where the museum truly shines for many.
Ultimately, the RISO Museum offers a unique experience where the art is presented within a stunning historical context. For those who appreciate contemporary art, especially when it's thoughtfully curated in temporary shows, and enjoy experiencing it within a grand palace setting, it can be a rewarding visit. However, managing expectations regarding the permanent collection is key, as opinions on its strength vary significantly.
