Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri for its fascinating, albeit grim, history, particularly the Inquisition prisons and the compelling prisoner graffiti. The Hall of the Barons' painted ceiling is a visual highlight. However, some find the mandatory guided tour rushed and the focus on the Inquisition overwhelming, wishing for more independent exploration time.

"Guided tour on the hour from 9am is only means of access. Friendly guide but echoey rooms and her Italian accent made understanding challenging. The tour felt rushed, and there was no unaccompanied time allowed in the rooms. Would have liked to linger to look at the drawings and words written by those incarcerated during the Inquisition. Instead took lots of photos to look at later, including of text which I'll have to translate."

Liz Caughey

"A surprisingly informative and exciting experience thanks primarily to the witty and nice guide. Palazzo Steri holds a rich albeit grim history, the wonderful architecture in stark contrast to its past. The medieval hall of barons overlooks a wonderful Garibaldi city park with imposing ficus trees. Buy a combo ticket for palazzo Steri and Orto Botanico if you're a history buff - you won't be disappointed."

Olga Radulovic

"React! Guttuso painted "La Vucchiria" in 1974 and donated the painting, as a gift, to his friend, the rector of the University of Palermo. Today, they've hijacked the painting and are profiting from it in ways its author never did. They've turned a selfless tribute to the city into a mandatory guided tour that costs 8 euros and is held every hour, lasting 45 minutes. La Vucchiria is the last room. And, what do you not interested in learning about the building's inquisitorial history? A university, a center of universal knowledge and culture, shouldn't be like this. Guttuso's La Vucchiria should be freely accessible to everyone, thus respecting the genesis of the work conceived by its author."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Dark History: Inquisition and Prisons

Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri's most chilling chapter is its time as the seat of the Spanish Inquisition in Sicily from the 16th to the 18th century. The palace was transformed into a prison, holding individuals accused of heresy and other religious offenses. The atmosphere within these former cells is palpable, offering a stark contrast to the grandeur of the palace's upper floors. Instagram

Visitors can explore the 'Philippine Prisons,' where the walls bear witness to the despair and resilience of those incarcerated. Numerous drawings, inscriptions, and graffiti left by the prisoners adorn the walls, providing a raw and deeply human connection to the past. These markings range from religious symbols and personal pleas to simple doodles, offering a poignant glimpse into their lives. InstagramReddit

This aspect of the palazzo's history is a significant draw for those interested in darker historical narratives. It serves as a powerful reminder of a difficult period and the human stories etched into the very fabric of the building. The guided tours focus heavily on this grim but fascinating history, making it a central part of the visitor experience. Reddit

Architectural Splendor: Gothic-Catalan and Renaissance

The Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri is a magnificent example of Gothic-Catalan architecture, commissioned by Manfred III Chiaramonte in the late 14th century. Its imposing facade and robust structure speak to the power and influence of the Chiaramonte family. The palace has undergone various transformations over the centuries, reflecting different architectural styles and historical periods. Instagram

A standout feature is the Sala Magna, or Hall of the Barons, on the first floor. This hall boasts an exceptionally well-preserved painted wooden ceiling, a masterpiece of medieval art. The intricate designs depict biblical scenes and courtly love motifs, showcasing the artistic achievements of the era. This opulent space stands in stark contrast to the austere prisons below, highlighting the dual nature of the palazzo's history. InstagramReddit

While the Inquisition period left its mark, the palace also retains elements of its original residential and administrative functions. The blend of defensive architecture with decorative elements makes Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri a significant monument in Palermo's architectural landscape, offering a rich visual experience for history and art enthusiasts. Instagram

The Art of 'La Vucciria'

A more recent, yet significant, addition to Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri's collection is Renato Guttuso's iconic painting, 'La Vucciria.' This vibrant and bustling depiction of Palermo's famous market was painted in 1974 and later donated to the University of Palermo by the artist. It represents a powerful artistic tribute to the city's lively spirit and everyday life. Reddit

The painting is displayed in a dedicated room, offering visitors a chance to appreciate Guttuso's expressive style and his keen observation of Sicilian culture. While some visitors feel the painting's display within a mandatory tour is a commercialization of a gift, its presence adds a significant artistic dimension to the palazzo. Reddit

'La Vucciria' serves as a colorful counterpoint to the darker historical narratives of the palace, showcasing Palermo's enduring vitality and artistic heritage. It's a testament to the city's rich cultural tapestry, from its medieval past to its modern artistic expressions. Reddit
