What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Necropolis of San Cerbone offers a glimpse into well-preserved Etruscan tombs, with the Tomb of the Pillars being a notable highlight. However, some visitors find the site expensive for the experience, particularly due to tours being predominantly in Italian, which can limit accessibility for non-speakers.
"Bought a ticket and was told we could join the current Italian tour to view the largest tomb (entry is by tour only) or wait a couple of minutes for the next tour to start. I naively assumed this meant an English tour was starting in a couple of minutes, or else why would we have been told about it at all? But instead, we stood around waiting for 15 minutes for the next tour, which was also exclusively in Italian. The tour involves standing in the crowded tomb and listening to a 20 minute Italian speech. The tomb might be interesting to see if it was less crowded for maybe 2 minutes. After that, of you're not near the exit, you'll just be stuck in a crowded dark room twiddling your thumbs for twenty minutes understanding nothing. I'm sure it's fascinating if you speak Italian. If you don't, give it a miss."

"Nice, but very expensive archeological park.
Would like to see culture being made more accessible, especially to large families.
That said it was pretty nice experience of Etruscan remains."

"Complete joke. For the price higher than for colosseum and forum romanum you have trail in the bushes with contradicting signs and on public roads."

Understanding the Etruscan Legacy
Visitors can explore various types of tombs, each with its own unique characteristics. The Tomb of the Pillars, for instance, is a standout feature, showcasing impressive structural elements that have withstood the test of time. Walking through these ancient chambers, one can almost feel the echoes of the past, imagining the lives and customs of the people who were laid to rest here centuries ago. It's a tangible connection to a lost world, making the visit both educational and profoundly moving.
While the site is rich in history, it's important to note that the experience can be enhanced by understanding the context. Some visitors have found the tours to be primarily in Italian, which can be a barrier for non-Italian speakers. Therefore, researching Etruscan history beforehand or considering a private guide can significantly enrich the appreciation of this remarkable archaeological park.
Navigating the Site and Tours
However, a common point of feedback from visitors is the language barrier on guided tours. Many tours are conducted exclusively in Italian, which can limit the experience for those who do not speak the language. This has led some visitors to feel that the site is not as accessible as it could be, especially considering the entrance fees. If you are not fluent in Italian, it is highly recommended to inquire about English-language tours in advance or consider hiring a private guide to ensure you can fully appreciate the historical narratives and details of the necropolis.
