Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Santa Maria della Pietà dei Turchini for its rich interior art, including stunning frescoes and statues, and its unique devotion to Our Lady Undoer of Knots. While the exterior is unassuming, the spiritual atmosphere and historical significance make it a worthwhile stop, though street noise can sometimes be a minor distraction.

"Santa Maria Incoronatella alla Chiesa dei Turchini. Not grand or impressive on the outside but containing beautiful frescoes and statues on the inside including an icon of Our Lady Undoer of Knots, seldom seen in other churches.

Most of the side chapels have beautiful frescoes and statues with corresponding prayers and introductions in Italian. They all have electronic candles for lighting and boxes to put in voluntary offerings or donations.

This church has many devotees who come in and drop a knotted cloth in Our Lady’s box or light candles and pray in the various chapels with their favorite saints.

Sounds from outside sometimes reach the church as it is located on a busy street but they fade away as you go further into the church where silence and a prayerful solemnity reign."

"Church of Santa Maria Incoronata was founded according to orders of Queen Giovanna I of Naples (1325-1382). Church was founded to memorize her and her second husband King Ludovico I of Naples (1320-1362) coronation in 1352. Since both belonged to Anjou branch of French Royal Family they received a thorn from the Jesus ' Crown of Thorns that used to be in the Sainte Chapelle de Paris and Santa Maria Incoronata was supposed to be the place for veneration and preservation of that relic in Naples.
This church is wonderful monument of medieval culture and architecture. You are going to find wonderful frescoes of XIV century and splendid funeral slabs of local aristocracy. Admission is free but any donation is welcomed and highly appreciated. Visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo without flash light."
