What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Sansevero Chapel for its breathtaking artistry, particularly the Veiled Christ, calling it a 'must-see' in Naples. The intricate details of the sculptures and the chapel's unique atmosphere are frequently highlighted as unforgettable experiences. However, many note the high ticket prices and the strict no-photography policy as drawbacks, with some finding the chapel itself to be smaller than expected.
"Definitely worth the visit. Some of the world’s best 18th Century sculpture. I recommend the audio guide. The text is exceptionally well written. Runs for about half an hour. If you go when it opens in the morning and book your ticket online, there is no wait."

"It’s a beautiful chapel and even more beautiful sculptures of Jesus and Sansevero’s deceased mother. The staff got a feeling they are prison guards so create the atmosphere of a prison when making loud “tssssssss” and yet shouting loud “NOOoooooo PhooooToooos”. I don’t think in any culture this is normal or considers hospitable. Italy likes a bit of DRAMA even in a chapel. You should employ friendlier staff!"

"Simply spine chilling, moving and a beautiful way to spend 30 minutes of your life! We made reservations in advance that included the audio-a must we felt, especially afterwards. We were granted entry at our set time immediately. Of course, rightly so, no cameras are allowed. Honestly, I was grateful for this as it allowed one to simply observe without phones blocking views. The narration was well presented and incredibly moving. We missed coming here on our last visit to Naples as we hadn't booked in advance -do yourself a favour and book prior to your visit to Naples."

The Artistry of the Veiled Christ
Many visitors are awestruck by the sheer realism and emotional impact of the Veiled Christ. The way the marble seems to mimic the texture and drape of fabric is a feat that continues to baffle and inspire art enthusiasts. It's a piece that demands quiet contemplation and appreciation for its technical brilliance and profound artistry.
The veil itself is a marvel, appearing so delicate that one can almost see through it. This illusion is achieved through a technique that has been debated by art historians for centuries, adding to the mystique of the sculpture. It's an experience that transcends mere viewing; it's an emotional connection to a pivotal moment in religious art.
Beyond the Veiled Christ: Other Masterpieces
Equally fascinating, and perhaps more macabre, are the 'Anatomical Machines'. These are two life-sized human skeletons, a male and a female, with their circulatory systems meticulously recreated in red and blue thread and glass tubes. Believed to be the work of Prince Raimondo di Sangro himself, they are a chilling and scientifically intriguing display that showcases the Prince's fascination with anatomy and his unconventional methods.
Other notable works include 'The Despair' (Disinganno) by Francesco Queirolo, depicting a figure breaking free from a net, and 'The Release from Purgatory' (Scoltura del Purgatorio). Each sculpture contributes to the chapel's reputation as a treasure trove of Baroque art and a reflection of the Prince's unique vision.
