What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Chiesa di Sant'Eligio Maggiore for its impressive Gothic architecture and the unique Sant'Eligio clock. Its historical significance as one of Naples' earliest Angevin churches, combined with its serene interior and the charm of its discovery, makes it a worthwhile stop. Some note that the surrounding area can sometimes be less tidy.
"A really impressive church, with a cool clock built into the exterior walls of the alley outside."
Matt B
"The church, the most ancient Anjou structure in Naples, was started in 1270. Its Gothic shapes can still be admired thanks to the restoration works after the bombs of 1943. The façade of the church is included in the boarding school, previously a hospital, which was annexed to it, so the entrance is through the enchanting lateral portal, inspired by French Gothic shapes.
The interior nowadays looks spare and austere, but full of light which filters from the big windows of the polygonal apse. It is worth mentioning the remains of the 14th-century paintings in the vaults of the fourth left aisle. Once out of the church, you can admire the bell tower with the big 19th-century clock."
