What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the absolutely stunning panoramic views from Monte Cairo, describing them as breathtaking and spanning vast regions of Italy. The historical significance, with visible traces of WWII battles, adds a unique and poignant layer to the experience. While the hikes can be challenging, the rewarding vistas and the chance to connect with history make it a memorable excursion.
"I recommend that all visitors to Monte Cassino go a little higher into the mountains. The terrain is wild, the route is difficult - but the views we see compensate for the great effort. We can cover part of the route by car, driving through the winding and narrow streets to Trelele. There, at the crossroads, we leave the cars and begin the adventure.
During the hike, we find history imprinted on the stones in the form of traces in the rock after the impact of shells.
This reminds us that the battle also took place higher in the mountains, in winter, in difficult weather conditions.
Tribute to the fallen..."

"I arrived in late August several decades ago (the early 1980s) and was enchanted by the stunning views spanning Lazio, Abruzzo, and the Tyrrhenian Sea, an incredible lookout over so much of Italy. I can still taste the flavor of some cherries I was lucky enough to find on some trees planted near the Forestry Shelter, an equally incredible, delightful surprise. They were so tiny, I thought they were black cherries, but... they were cherries, with little pulp, but truly excellent and delicious, not to mention untreated!"

"It's incredible how often the importance of the rear areas of a war front like Mount Cairo is underestimated. Surrounded by nature, the scars of those tragic clashes between the Allied forces and the German army are still present. An enchanting place, yet in some places it has been excessively affected by human influence. The old Gustav Line is still a source of tremendous and surprising discussion."
