What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors acknowledge the historical significance and evocative nature of Castello dei Pico Mirandola, appreciating its imposing exterior architecture. However, the ongoing restoration due to earthquake damage means much of the castle is inaccessible, leading to a somewhat limited experience. Despite this, the structure's resilience and historical narrative are recognized as key draws.
"At the moment, I don't feel like giving a rating higher than three stars ⭐; the castle 🏰 is certainly evocative and pleasant in its urban setting, but, at least for now, visitors must be content with a look 👀 from the outside. The structure, like Mirandola more generally, has faced difficult times, but we are confident that the complex will be fully recovered 🏗🧱 enough to make it accessible to the public again.

"A sprawling castle in the center of Mirandola, construction began in 1102. From 1311 to 1711, it was the residence of the Pico family, who expanded it into an imposing quadrilateral structure. In 1500, a tower deemed impregnable was added; in 1510-11 and 1551, it was besieged twice by Popes Julius II and Julius III, respectively. In 1617, the Pico family was invested with the title of dukes, transforming it into a palace famous throughout Europe. In 1771, it passed to the Este family of Modena, beginning its decline. This decline was compounded in 1714 by the explosion of the powder magazine in the main tower, triggered by lightning, which destroyed much of the castle. It underwent modifications in the 19th century, and in 1930, part of the tower and a section of the crenellated walls were rebuilt. After serving as an apartment building and a porn theater, it was finally restored in 2006 as a civic museum and cultural center. Unfortunately, the 2012 earthquake rendered it unusable, and work is still underway. Two wings that remain open house two venues, the Note di Malto and the Degusteria. It remains an important testament to 900 years of local history."

"Unfortunately, it's still under construction, but it's still fun to visit.
It belonged to my family a long time ago.
But I have the family crest on my wall, so I wanted to see it in person sometime."

A Glimpse into History
The castle's fortunes took a turn in 1771 when it passed to the Este family, initiating a period of decline. A catastrophic explosion of the powder magazine in 1714, triggered by lightning, devastated a large portion of the structure. Despite modifications in the 19th century and partial reconstructions in the 20th, the castle faced further challenges, even serving as an apartment building and a porn theater before its restoration as a civic museum and cultural center in 2006.
Tragically, the devastating 2012 earthquake rendered the castle unusable, and it remains under extensive restoration. While much of its historical interior is inaccessible, the resilient structure stands as a powerful symbol of Mirandola's enduring spirit and its nearly 900 years of history.
Navigating Restoration and Access
Despite the limitations, the accessible wings of the castle house two venues: Note di Malto and Degusteria. These offer a chance to experience a part of the castle and enjoy local offerings. The resilience of the structure, having survived centuries of conflict and natural disasters, is palpable even when viewed from the outside. It remains an important testament to the town's history and its determination to rebuild and preserve its heritage.
