Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Castello Sforzesco for its impressive scale, rich history, and the significant art collections housed within its walls, particularly Michelangelo's Rondanini Pietà. Many appreciate the free access to the courtyards, offering a grand experience without an entry fee. Some find the museum signage could be more extensive, and occasional crowds can detract from the experience during peak times.

"Very beautiful castle with lots of exhibitions on different topics. We spent hours there. At the end it was too much input.
Every first and third Tuesday of the month the entrance is free. Not sure if the whole day or after 2pm (read different information). We arrived at 2:30pm and it was definitely free. Closing time was 5:30pm."

"Sforzesco Castle feels less like a tourist attraction and more like a time machine parked in the middle of Milan. I visited on a sunny afternoon, and walking through the massive gates felt like entering another world—one that echoes with the footsteps of dukes, soldiers, artists, and everyday Milanese.

The inner courtyards are stunning—grand but oddly peaceful, with locals sitting in the shade or reading a book on the benches like it’s just another Sunday. I spent a good hour just wandering around the outer walls and moat before even entering any of the museums.

Inside, it's a treasure trove. I wasn’t expecting to see Michelangelo’s last sculpture just sitting quietly in one of the rooms. That alone gave me chills. The museum layout is a bit old-school, but charmingly so, and the variety of art and artifacts—from Renaissance armor to Egyptian relics—is impressive.

I recommend going early or later in the day—it can get a bit crowded, especially near the main courtyards. Also, if you have time, grab a gelato and stroll through Parco Sempione behind the castle—it's the perfect way to end the visit.

Definitely one of the most memorable places I saw in Milan. Not just for the beauty, but for the soul it carries."

"Huge, beautiful castle, which mostly served as a palace for the royal Sforza family, in the center of Milan. It is a popular place to visit, so if you want to see art inside, you should probably buy tickets in advance (I did). The museums inside contain a treasure trove of art, including the last sculpture of Michelangelo (The Rondanini Pieta), paintings of Mantegna, Titian, Tintoretto and others. The famous Sala delle Asse was closed, but you were still able to pick inside to see a very faded Leonardo painting on the ceiling. A separate ticket is required to walk on the castle wall and absorb a great view from the top. There is a park behind the castle where you can stroll for the rest of the day"
