Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the unique historical significance and the spectacular panoramic views of Matera from the Monterrone complex. The ancient frescoes and the experience of exploring rock-hewn churches are frequently highlighted as unforgettable aspects of a visit. However, the challenging terrain and strict no-photography rule inside the crypt are noted drawbacks.

"The Monterrone complex, a spectacular tuff rock mass that rises in the Sasso Caveoso and dominates Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, is composed of two interconnected rock churches: the Crypt of San Giovanni in Monterrone, the older one, thought to have been built between the 12th and 13th centuries, and the Rock Church of Santa Maria di Idris, built between the 14th and 15th centuries. The Crypt, however, having been abandoned for a long time and for a long time, was annexed to the adjacent church of Santa Maria di Idris in the early 19th century by a narrow internal connecting corridor; it houses an interesting cycle of 12th and 13th-century frescoes."

"The night view from here is the best! Go around sunset and see the night view too!"

"The crypt of San Giovanni in Monterrone is completely dug into the rock unlike the adjacent communicating church of Santa Maria dell'Idris.
The original layout of the church seems to date back to a period between the 12th and 13th centuries.
The church features numerous precious frescoes from the year 1000 and in Greek-Byzantine style.
These frescoes are protected and it is therefore not possible to photograph the interior of the crypt.
The narrow passageway between the two churches dates back to the early 1800s and led to the destruction of several frescoes (today only a small part of which is visible on the wall). This explains the different authors of the paintings and the subjects chosen in the works.
Going out into the open air you find yourself on a terrace from which you have a fantastic view of the Sassi.

Access to this church is not exactly wheelchair accessible because the place is difficult to reach on foot (up and down the streets of Matera) and the entrance is also not well structured.
It is advisable to call first to check the visiting hours, because they vary according to the season:
- winter/autumn 10-16
- approximately from Easter to September 10-19
- in the month of August a particular timetable may be scheduled continuously from 10-22."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of the Monterrone Complex

The Monterrone complex is a fascinating testament to Matera's ancient past, comprising two interconnected rock churches carved directly into the tuff rock. The Crypt of San Giovanni in Monterrone is the older of the two, believed to have been established between the 12th and 13th centuries. It is renowned for its surviving Greek-Byzantine style frescoes, which offer a rare glimpse into the religious art of that era. These frescoes, though partially lost, depict significant religious scenes and figures, providing invaluable historical and artistic insights. Reddit

The Rock Church of Santa Maria di Idris was constructed later, between the 14th and 15th centuries. Due to prolonged abandonment and subsequent damage, the two churches were joined in the early 19th century via a narrow internal corridor. This unification, while preserving the sites, unfortunately led to the destruction of some original frescoes. The differing artistic styles and subjects of the paintings in each section reflect their distinct historical periods and influences. Reddit

Today, the complex stands as a unique architectural and artistic marvel. Visitors can explore the cool, cavernous interiors, marvel at the surviving artwork, and appreciate the ingenuity of those who carved these sacred spaces from the living rock. The site's preservation efforts ensure that future generations can continue to learn from and be inspired by its rich history. Reddit

Experiencing the Panoramic Views

One of the most compelling reasons to visit Santa Maria de Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone is the breathtaking panoramic view it offers. Stepping out onto the exterior terrace, visitors are greeted with a spectacular vista of the Sassi di Matera, the ancient cave dwellings that define the city's unique landscape. This vantage point provides an unparalleled perspective on the sprawling, honey-colored stone structures cascading down the ravine. Reddit

The experience is particularly magical during sunset. As the sun dips below the horizon, the Sassi are bathed in a warm, golden light, creating a truly unforgettable scene. Many visitors recommend staying until dusk to witness the transition from daylight to the illuminated nightscape, when the Sassi twinkle with lights, transforming the ancient city into a magical spectacle. Reddit

This viewpoint is not just a photo opportunity; it's a moment to connect with the profound history and enduring beauty of Matera. It offers a sense of scale and wonder, allowing visitors to truly appreciate why Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a place of immense cultural significance. Reddit

Navigating Matera's Terrain

Visiting the rock churches of Santa Maria de Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone means immersing yourself in the unique topography of Matera's Sassi. The terrain is inherently challenging, characterized by steep, winding paths, numerous staircases, and uneven stone surfaces. This is not a destination for those seeking easy, flat walks. Reddit

Comfortable, sturdy footwear is absolutely essential. Forget delicate sandals or high heels; think hiking shoes or robust trainers that provide good grip and ankle support. Visitors are strongly advised to wear appropriate shoes to prevent slips and falls, especially after rain or in the early morning dew. Reddit

Due to the difficult access, the Monterrone complex is not wheelchair accessible, nor is it easily navigable with strollers. Travelers with mobility issues should be aware of these limitations. Planning your route, taking your time, and being mindful of your footing are key to a safe and enjoyable exploration of this historic site. Reddit
