What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Castello Tramontano is a visually striking, albeit unfinished, historical site. Visitors appreciate its imposing exterior and the convenient free parking it offers for exploring Matera. However, many note its neglected state, lack of interior access, and the unkempt condition of the surrounding park, which can detract from the overall experience.
"While the castle itself is visually impressive, I personally felt that visiting it was not the best use of my time. 🥲
The surrounding area is poorly maintained and lacks proper accessibility, which takes away from the experience. It’s important to note that visitors are not allowed inside the castle—entry is blocked, and the entrance appears neglected. 🥺
As a result, we couldn’t explore the interior. The area could benefit from better organization to enhance the visitor experience. That said, since it’s close to the city center, you could still include it in your itinerary for a quick 5–10 minute stop to admire the exterior 💓"

"Could be great, but fenced off from afar, falling into ruins, and not kept up. Could be a great museum or place to visit with such historical value."

"Neat to look at but very rundown all around. Weeds growing everywhere, dead trees, overgrown grass, and busted concrete make up the surrounding area.
Could be neat if money was put into the landscaping but instead you have people sleeping on parking benches or kids making out (or worse) on them. Did not feel safe taking kids up there. I tried to only take pics of the good parts."

The Unfinished Legacy of Castello Tramontano
Today, Castello Tramontano remains largely unfinished, a stark silhouette against the Materan sky. While visitors cannot explore its interior due to safety concerns and neglect, its imposing exterior continues to draw attention. The surrounding park, though also showing signs of wear, offers a vantage point for appreciating the castle's architecture and the expansive views it commands over Matera and the Murgia plateau. The site serves as a powerful reminder of historical power struggles and the enduring impact of local sentiment on grand architectural projects.
Despite its current state, the castle holds a unique place in Matera's landscape. It's a popular spot for quick photos and offers a convenient, free parking solution for those exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Sassi. While some visitors express disappointment at the lack of interior access and the unkempt condition of the grounds, others appreciate its historical significance and the dramatic visual it provides.
Navigating the Grounds and Surrounding Area
For many, the castle's most practical function is its role as a free parking area. This is a significant benefit for tourists visiting Matera, as parking in the historic center can be challenging and expensive. The castle is approximately a 10-minute walk from the main attractions of the Sassi, making it a convenient starting point for exploration. While the park itself may not be a destination for leisurely strolls, its utility as a parking hub and its proximity to the city center make it a worthwhile stop for many visitors.
Occasionally, the castle grounds are utilized for events, such as concerts or cultural festivals. Checking local event listings might reveal opportunities to experience the site in a more vibrant context. However, for general sightseeing, the focus remains on admiring the castle's exterior and enjoying the distant views of Matera's unique cave dwellings.
