Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Duomo di San Cerbone and Piazza Garibaldi as a stunning medieval gem. The cathedral's architectural grandeur and significant artworks are frequently highlighted, alongside the charm and vibrant atmosphere of the piazza. It's considered a must-see for its historical and artistic value.

"The cathedral of Massa di Maremma was built starting in the 11th century, when the bishop of Populonia chose the hills of Monteregio as his residence. Completed in its current form later, it is one of the most significant examples of Romanesque and Gothic art in Italy. Numerous masters of the period contributed to its splendor, most notably Giovanni Pisano.
Inside the cathedral, you can admire numerous works of art, including the Ark of Saint Cerbone, the patron saint of the diocese, created by Goro di Gregorio, the baptismal font by Giraldo da Como, and the Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna.
Very beautiful, highly recommended."

Patrizia Valentini

"October 10, 2025, Feast of San Cerbone, Patron Saint of Massa Marittima, with our Bishop Carlo Ciattini and the Bishop of Grosseto, Bernardino Giordano. The Cathedral of San Cerbone in Massa Marittima is the principal church of the Diocese. It is dedicated to San Cerbone, patron saint of the city, and behind the high altar, in the center of the apse, is the ark of San Cerbone containing his remains. In the chapel of the right nave is a precious panel painting by Duccio di Buoninsegna depicting the Madonna delle Grazie. During the Christmas season, a beautiful nativity scene is set up in the lower section of the Cathedral, which is accessed from the side next to the Chapel of the Madonna. In 2025, it is the principal Jubilee Church of the Diocese.
It is truly worth a visit to admire other works of considerable importance and interest."

Mirta Rossi

"The Cathedral of San Cerbone in Massa Marittima is a true masterpiece, dominating the charming historic center. The first impression you get as soon as you arrive in the main square is of an imposing and majestic building, perfectly integrated into its surroundings.
Its Romanesque-Gothic façade is a true gem. The triangular pediment, the finely carved rose window, and the three richly decorated doors recount centuries of history and art. The cathedral's interior, with its three naves, is equally evocative and conveys a strong sense of spirituality.
Among the most notable works of art are the ark of San Cerbone, the city's patron saint, and the baptismal font, both sculptural masterpieces. The light filtering through the stained-glass windows creates a magical and almost surreal atmosphere, inviting contemplation.
The cathedral is not just a freestanding building, but the beating heart of Piazza Garibaldi, one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Surrounded by medieval buildings and boasting breathtaking views, the square is the perfect setting to admire the cathedral's magnificence from every angle.
The Cathedral of San Cerbone is a must-see for anyone visiting Massa Marittima. It's not simply a place of worship, but a monument that encapsulates the soul and history of an entire city."
