"The cathedral of Massa di Maremma was built starting in the 11th century, when the bishop of Populonia chose the hills of Monteregio as his residence. Completed in its current form later, it is one of the most significant examples of Romanesque and Gothic art in Italy. Numerous masters of the period contributed to its splendor, most notably Giovanni Pisano.
Inside the cathedral, you can admire numerous works of art, including the Ark of Saint Cerbone, the patron saint of the diocese, created by Goro di Gregorio, the baptismal font by Giraldo da Como, and the Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna.

"October 10, 2025, Feast of San Cerbone, Patron Saint of Massa Marittima, with our Bishop Carlo Ciattini and the Bishop of Grosseto, Bernardino Giordano. The Cathedral of San Cerbone in Massa Marittima is the principal church of the Diocese. It is dedicated to San Cerbone, patron saint of the city, and behind the high altar, in the center of the apse, is the ark of San Cerbone containing his remains. In the chapel of the right nave is a precious panel painting by Duccio di Buoninsegna depicting the Madonna delle Grazie. During the Christmas season, a beautiful nativity scene is set up in the lower section of the Cathedral, which is accessed from the side next to the Chapel of the Madonna. In 2025, it is the principal Jubilee Church of the Diocese.
It is truly worth a visit to admire other works of considerable importance and interest."
