"My main reason for visiting Mantua was chiefly because Giuseppe Sarto was bishop here (1884-1893) before becoming Pope St Pius X, in 1903. Alas, I was disappointed, since his cathedral church only has a very simple altar in his honour. Never the less, the Cathedral is still worth visiting. The current building is of the 11th century (built after the previous building burnt down and excavations show that this was a Christian religious site dating back to the early christians). The numerous modifications it has undergone take away any preset stylistic unity. Very much a mixed bag of Baroque, Romanesque and Gothic. However it is still an imposing building with an enormous amount of frescos. You could spend hours just examining them all. Several members of the Gonzaga family are buried here. Other historical artefacts can be found, with a 4th century sarcophagus being the oldest. The Blessed Sacrament chapel (to the left of the main altar) is also very beautiful and very peaceful."

Architectural Tapestry
The interior, significantly restored by Giulio Romano, showcases a remarkable fusion of styles. You'll find elements of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque periods, creating a unique visual narrative. This 'mixed bag' of styles, as some visitors describe it, is precisely what gives the cathedral its distinct character and historical depth.
Key features to admire include the impressive coffered ceiling, the vibrant frescos that adorn its walls and vaults, and the ornate pipe organ. The Blessed Sacrament chapel, often noted for its beauty and peaceful ambiance, offers a space for quiet contemplation amidst the grandeur.
Artistic Treasures Within
The restoration efforts, particularly those attributed to Giulio Romano, have preserved and highlighted these artistic treasures. The beautifully coffered ceiling is another element that captivates visitors, adding to the richness of the interior.
Historically, the cathedral also serves as a burial site for several members of the influential Gonzaga family, adding another layer of historical importance. The presence of a 4th-century sarcophagus makes it the oldest historical artifact within the cathedral, underscoring its deep roots.
