Day trip to the beautiful Locoroponco in Puglia 🇮🇹.. The first official document mentioning Locorotondo dates back to 1195. The old town dominates the cummerse: typical houses with pointed roof, who’s facades are periodically white washed since the 17th century 👩‍🎨 meeting up with the very talented Micheal Brennan..my Nads is so excited 🥰♥️💚 #food #friends

"The hotel is a collection of apartments or even entire homes scattered around the old city center. It has a centraly located breakfast room. We enjoyed this kind of very walkable accommodation. But be aware that access to the "rooms" can be difficult if mobility impaired due to sometimes steep stairs. Great, friendly service. Very clean. Also large free parking accros the reception."

Paul V

"I would have given 7 stars to the location if I could because our room was literally in the heart of Locorotondo!

The room came with a kitchenette and a living area so very very spacious. The washroom is a bit small but that's okay. We also had a nice balcony on the rear end with a gorgeous view of Locorotondo!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Architecture: 'Cummerse' Houses

Locorotondo is instantly recognizable for its distinctive 'cummerse' houses, a unique architectural style found primarily in this Puglian town. These dwellings are characterized by their steeply pitched, pointed roofs, which are often constructed using a special technique resembling crochet work. This design is not merely aesthetic; it was historically functional, helping to shed rainwater efficiently and providing insulation. The facades of these houses are typically whitewashed, a tradition dating back to the 17th century, which reflects the sunlight and keeps interiors cool during the hot Mediterranean summers. Instagram+2

Wandering through the circular old town, you'll find these 'cummerse' lining the narrow, winding streets, creating a picturesque and almost fairytale-like atmosphere. Many of these historic structures have been lovingly preserved and some are now part of the 'Albergo Diffuso Sotto le Cummerse,' offering visitors a chance to stay in these unique homes. This immersive experience allows guests to truly connect with the town's heritage and architectural identity. InstagramReddit

When exploring, take note of the intricate stonework and the charming details that make each 'cummerse' unique. The visual impact of these houses, especially when bathed in the soft light of dawn or dusk, makes Locorotondo a photographer's dream. Instagram

Experiencing Locorotondo: The 'Albergo Diffuso' Concept

For an authentic stay in Locorotondo, consider the 'Albergo Diffuso' concept, exemplified by 'Sotto le Cummerse'. This innovative approach to hospitality involves repurposing existing homes and apartments scattered throughout the historic center into guest accommodations. Instead of a single, monolithic hotel building, you're essentially staying in a collection of charming, individual dwellings that are part of the town's fabric. Reddit

This means your 'room' could be a cozy apartment with a kitchenette and living area, offering more space and a more local feel than a traditional hotel room. The 'Albergo Diffuso' model fosters a deeper connection with the destination, allowing guests to live amongst locals and experience the rhythm of daily life. Breakfast is typically served in a communal, central location, providing a social hub for guests. Reddit

While this offers a unique experience, it's important to be aware that some of these historic accommodations may feature steep stairs, as is common in old European towns. Guests with mobility concerns should inquire about ground-floor options when booking to ensure a comfortable stay. Reddit

The Circular Charm of the Old Town

Locorotondo's historic center is renowned for its unique circular layout, a feature that sets it apart from many other Italian towns. This concentric design, which gives the town its name ('rotondo' meaning round), creates a fascinating labyrinth of narrow, whitewashed alleys that invite exploration. As you wander, you'll discover hidden courtyards, charming piazzas, and breathtaking viewpoints that offer panoramic vistas of the surrounding Valle d'Itria. Instagram

The circular structure also contributes to a sense of intimacy and community within the old town. It's a place where you can easily get lost (in the best way possible) and stumble upon unexpected beauty at every turn. The absence of cars within much of the historic center enhances the pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, making it a joy to explore on foot. Instagram

This unique urban planning is a testament to the town's long history, with its origins tracing back to ancient settlements. The continuous development within its defensive walls has preserved this distinctive circular form, making it a living piece of architectural history. Instagram
