Reviews Summary

Torre Viscontea is a historic tower in Lecco, primarily functioning as a venue for temporary exhibitions. While its historical significance is noted, visitors often express frustration with its unpredictable opening hours, which are strictly tied to exhibition schedules. When open for an exhibition, entry is usually free and can offer a pleasant cultural experience.

"Suppost to be open since 2, we came at 2, it was close, we came at 2.15, it was close....really?"

Wiktor Brzozowski-Kaczmarek

"Of fourteenth-century origin, the tower is probably the oldest building in Lecco. The highest part of the tower was built during the fifteenth century. The tower is all that remains of the triangular-shaped city walls, an integral part of the military fortress.

The castle was part of the latter, located in a central position and close to the lake, which was the main entrance gate to the village open towards Milan. It was demolished by Joseph II between 1782 and 1784.

On its left side there was a guardhouse, from which one could access the staircase that led to the bastion of the pier, where the sentry box was located, while on the right there was a large warehouse as well as a courtyard for the soldiers.

After the restoration of 1816, by the Lecco architect Giuseppe Bovara, the tower was used as a prison (a use recovered from the time of the Spanish domination of the Duchy of Milan) and, starting in 1932, after a further restoration, it was entrusted by the State to the Municipality of Lecco which initially established the Museum of the Risorgimento and Resistance of the city, to later convert it into a venue for temporary exhibitions of the Civic Museums and the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Lecco.

On the ground floor, the guardhouse and some stone cannonballs are still visible"

Nicola Tisi

"I went there twice yesterday afternoon. Both times it was completely closed. What a shame, I could have saved myself the trip."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Glimpse into Lecco's History

Torre Viscontea stands as a significant historical landmark in Lecco, dating back to the 14th century. It is the sole surviving element of the town's original triangular city walls and served as a crucial part of its military fortress. The tower's strategic location near the lake made it a key entrance point to the village, particularly for those approaching from Milan. The castle, once integrated with the tower, was unfortunately demolished in the late 18th century. Reddit

Over the centuries, the tower has seen various uses. After a restoration in 1816, it functioned as a prison, a role it held since the Spanish rule of the Duchy of Milan. A further restoration in 1932 led to its transfer to the Municipality of Lecco. Initially, it housed the Museum of the Risorgimento and Resistance, before evolving into a versatile venue for temporary exhibitions managed by the Civic Museums and the Department of Culture. Reddit

Visitors can still observe elements of its past on the ground floor, including the original guardhouse and stone cannonballs, offering tangible connections to its military and defensive history. These remnants provide a unique perspective on Lecco's evolution from a fortified settlement to the city it is today.

Navigating Exhibition-Dependent Access

A key aspect of visiting Torre Viscontea is understanding its reliance on temporary exhibitions for public access. Unlike many historical sites that maintain consistent visiting hours, Torre Viscontea's interior is primarily utilized as a space for rotating art shows, historical displays, and cultural events. This means that if there isn't an exhibition scheduled, the tower may be completely closed to visitors, leading to potential disappointment for those who arrive expecting to explore the structure itself. Reddit

This exhibition-centric model often means that admission is free when events are running, making it an accessible cultural experience. Exhibitions have ranged from local high school student art, showcasing impressive watercolor techniques, to more historically focused displays. The free entry aspect is a significant draw, especially for budget-conscious travelers or those looking for spontaneous cultural engagement. Reddit

To ensure a successful visit, it is paramount to consult the official schedule of the Municipality of Lecco's Department of Culture or local Lecco tourism websites. Checking these sources in advance will confirm if an exhibition is currently underway and provide the specific opening hours associated with it. This proactive approach will help avoid the frustration of finding the tower unexpectedly closed.
