What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the natural beauty and historical significance of Laghetto della Costa, particularly its unique thermal waters and the scenic views from surrounding paths. However, many express disappointment that direct access to the lake is restricted due to it being private property, preventing swimming or closer exploration.
"Can't really get anywhere near it, so can only see from above. Shame because it's meant to be thermal."
John Murphy
"Costa's "thermal" lake can only be visited upon request from the owners, who have fenced it off to prevent dangerous bathing and vandalism.
Supplied only by a hot spring, its once vast basin is gradually shrinking.
It was once used to collect mud (now a prerogative of Lispida) used by nearby Abano and Montegrotto, and was the site of a Paleolithic settlement, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It remains delightful, a blue liquid surrounded by reeds and shrubs, visible from the road and hillside paths, and mysterious when the mist rises from its warm surface, evoking old tales and legends long since forgotten."
Edoardo Franco
"Laghetto della Costa, one of the prehistoric pile-dwelling sites around the Alps, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 because Bronze Age pile-dwellings were discovered there. The first inhabitants of this area certainly also recognized the benefits of this lake with its hot springs. It is fed by a thermal spring that flows at the end of a small peninsula jutting out toward the center of the lake. And it is from this lake (and the nearby Lispida lake) that the wonderful mud baths of Abano and Montegrotto Terme are harvested."

Understanding Laghetto della Costa's Status
Despite the lack of direct access, the lake remains a captivating sight. It's fed by a thermal spring, contributing to its warm waters and the mysterious mist that often rises from its surface, especially in the mornings. This natural phenomenon evokes a sense of ancient legends and adds to the site's allure. Visitors can still appreciate its beauty from the surrounding roadside and hillside paths, offering picturesque views of the blue water nestled amongst reeds and shrubs.
Historical and Geological Significance
Geologically, the lake is a product of a thermal spring that feeds its basin. Historically, this thermal activity was harnessed for more than just its natural beauty. The lake, along with the nearby Lispida lake, was a source for the thermal mud used in the renowned spas of Abano and Montegrotto Terme. This dual significance—as a site of ancient human history and a source of natural thermal resources—makes Laghetto della Costa a place of considerable interest.
