What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often describe Isernia's Centro Storico as a charming, albeit compact, historic area. The Fontana Fraterna is consistently praised as a beautiful and historic landmark, offering refreshing free water. "One of the most ‘blink and you miss it’ landmarks I’ve ever visited. Pretty fountain, but not much else to keep you here"
Nadia Signore
"Beautiful work of art. Its name derives from the fact that it rises in the same district where the Confraternity established in 1289 by Pietro Angelerio, the future Pope Celestino V.
The fountain was built in 1835 by the noble Isernina Rampini family and was placed in Largo Concezione (the current Piazza Celestino V). It is the fusion of two previously existing fountains, one located near the atrium of the cathedral of Isernia and the other already existing in Largo Concezione. It is not known on which of the two fountains the inscription of the Rampinians was present.
As for the other two inscriptions, AE PONT "can be seen in the fountain of the market" while D.M.S. FUNDANIAE SECURAE PESCENNIUS SECURUS NEC IMMERITO “exists in the fountain of the Conception [3]. Theodor Mommsen in 1844 described the entire fountain and observed that the inscription AE PONT came from the market fountain.
In addition to the union of the two fountains described above, pieces of another ancient source located under the arch of San Pietro were added to the fountain, extending and raising it by a few palms.
In 1889, as reported in the municipal historical archive, the fountain was moved from the square in front of the church of the Concezione onto via Marcelli (a little further down).
The fountain remained in its new location until 10 September 1943 when, during the allied bombing on the city of Isernia, it was seriously damaged; it was faithfully reconstructed in the following years using the recovered parts."
