"Is Arutas Beach is truly unique, with its white quartz sand and crystal-clear waters. Easy access with nearby parking, and the beach is also wheelchair friendly. A rare and exceptional spot to relax, swim, and enjoy unforgettable views."

Nidhal ZOUARI

"A white coarse grain quartz “sand” beach. Quite special. The water is very clear and we enjoyed swimming in it. The waves weren’t too big although you get deep very quickly.
There are showers to get the salt and the sand off.
We came by bike so parking wasn’t a cost or problem. If to go further south along the dirt road then the parking is free."

Simon Round

"Arrived early in the morning around 9.30. Payed parking not cheap. 8.50euro for 6 hours or 10 euro for the all day. From the parking there à several paths to walk. The one nicer than the other with a small bridge to pass. Today no beach garde and no marking of the safe swimming area. The beach was today after the big rain and thunder showers à little bit mixed with dry grass. There are a lot of rocks, small and big to take care of. Even for your parasol you have to find the right spot to dig into the risotto liked small stone beach. The sea was calm and enough places to install yourself. Overall an ok beach. Don’t forget to follow the local restrictions of the Sardinia beaches with big fines."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Quartz Sand of Is Arutas

Is Arutas Beach is world-renowned for its extraordinary sand, which isn't typical sand at all. Instead, it's composed of millions of tiny, smooth grains of quartz. These grains, often described as looking like rice or small pearls, are a result of the natural erosion of the nearby island of Mal Di Ventre. Carried by marine currents, they form the distinctive, shimmering shoreline that sets Is Arutas apart from other beaches. The texture is unique, offering a different sensation underfoot compared to fine sand, and it can feel quite warm due to its composition. Instagram+2

This unique 'rice sand' is not only visually striking but also contributes to the beach's overall character. While beautiful, some visitors find the coarse grains less comfortable for lounging directly on without a towel or mat. However, many appreciate the natural massage it provides. The quartz composition also means the sand is very clean and bright, reflecting the sunlight and enhancing the vibrant colors of the sea. Reddit

When visiting, be mindful of local regulations that protect this precious natural resource. Taking large quantities of the quartz sand is prohibited, as it's a vital part of the beach's ecosystem and appeal. Enjoy its beauty responsibly, and perhaps consider water shoes for added comfort. Reddit

Exploring the Sinis Peninsula

Is Arutas Beach is part of the larger Sinis Peninsula, a region in western Sardinia known for its wild beauty, archaeological sites, and unique coastal landscapes. The peninsula offers a rich tapestry of experiences beyond just the beach, making it a compelling destination for those seeking more than just sunbathing. Instagram

Adjacent to Is Arutas, you'll find other beautiful beaches like Maimoni and Mari Ermi, each with its own charm but sharing the characteristic quartz sand. The area is also a haven for nature lovers, with salt pans that attract flamingos and other bird species, particularly during certain times of the year. The Sinis Peninsula is a protected marine area, emphasizing the importance of preserving its natural environment. Instagram

For history buffs, the ancient Phoenician-Punic city of Tharros is a must-visit. Located on a promontory overlooking the sea, these ruins offer a glimpse into Sardinia's long and complex past. The proximity of these historical sites to the stunning beaches makes the Sinis Peninsula an ideal location for a well-rounded Sardinian adventure, blending natural beauty with cultural exploration.
