Reviews Summary

Grado's main beach is praised for its extreme shallowness, making it ideal and safe for families with young children. However, the paid access model and high rental costs for sunbeds are frequently cited as drawbacks, alongside the very shallow water which requires a long walk to swim. The old town is generally well-regarded for its charm and historical appeal.

"During our road trip, we made a refreshing stop for a swim at Spiaggia Principale in Grado. We found parking easily near the beach, which was a pleasant surprise. Since we only planned to take a quick dip, we didn’t rent any sun loungers (which would have been quite expensive) —instead, we headed straight to the shoreline for swimming.

The beach itself is very shallow, and there can be some algae in the water. At low tide, the shoreline likely recedes quite far, making the walk to deeper water a bit longer. A little further out, there’s a floating swim platform where the water is noticeably deeper and better for swimming.

While we didn’t find the beach particularly beautiful, it was clean enough and perfect for a short stop. The town of Grado itself seemed interesting. We might just return one day to explore it more."

"Beach entrance in August 2023 was €27 for 2 sunbeds and umbrella. The beach was ok, quite clean, with free toilets, showers, lots of cafes along the promenade.

The sea is really very, very shallow. It takes about 20 minutes to go in and swim. In the evening, at low tide, the sea becomes even shallower."

"Sandy beach, freee cold showers on shore and warm shower for 1€ with changing room. The water was shallow and brown though."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Grado's Unique Beach

Grado's Spiaggia Principale is known for its exceptionally shallow waters, a feature that makes it a haven for families with young children. The sea recedes significantly, meaning you can walk for a considerable distance before reaching water deep enough to swim properly. This unique characteristic means that if you're looking for a traditional swimming experience, you'll want to head towards the floating swim platform located further offshore. Be aware that algae can sometimes be present in the water, and at low tide, the shallowness is even more pronounced. Reddit

While the beach offers amenities like free cold showers and paid warm showers with changing rooms, the paid access model for sunbeds and umbrellas has drawn criticism from some visitors who feel beaches should be a public right. Prices can be quite high during peak season, so factor this into your budget if you plan to spend a full day lounging. The food from beach bars has also received mixed reviews, with many suggesting it's better to explore dining options in the charming old town. Reddit

Despite these points, the beach's safety for children and its convenient location make it a popular choice. The old town of Grado itself is a delightful contrast, offering a glimpse into Venetian-influenced architecture with its narrow, winding streets and historic buildings. It's a place that invites leisurely exploration after a day by the sea. Reddit

Exploring Grado Old Town

Grado's historic heart is a labyrinth of narrow, cobblestone streets that exude a timeless charm. The architecture here is distinctly Venetian-influenced, a legacy of its historical ties to the Republic of Venice. Wandering through these alleys, you'll discover picturesque squares, colorful buildings adorned with flower boxes, and a palpable sense of history. It’s a place where you can easily lose track of time, simply by strolling and taking in the atmosphere. Reddit

A must-see within the old town is the Basilica di Sant'Eufemia, a beautiful Romanesque church that stands as a testament to Grado's rich past. Nearby, the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie offers further historical insight. The town's layout is compact, making it ideal for exploration on foot. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the local markets or simply sit at a cafe and people-watch. Reddit

Beyond the historical sites, the old town is also home to a variety of shops, artisan boutiques, and restaurants. It provides a wonderful counterpoint to the beach experience, offering cultural immersion and culinary delights. Many visitors find that a combination of beach time and old town exploration makes for a perfect day trip or short stay. Reddit
