Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Teatro Girolamo Magnani as a beautiful, well-kept theatre with a long history and perfect proportions, offering a warm, intimate atmosphere. While the venue is largely admired as a 'little gem' and 'treasure chest of art,' some find the seating in the upper boxes to be uncomfortable.

"The theatre was built on the site of an ancient church dedicated to Saint Francis, annexed to the Franciscan convent closed in compliance with the Napoleonic decrees of the early 19th century and demolished around 1860.[1] The company that promoted its construction, consisting of 39 people, commissioned the architect Nicolò Bettoli to carry out the project, who started the construction site in 1813, following the demolition of the place of worship; however, the works were suspended a few years later due to lack of funds.[2]

In 1831, the promoting company proposed to the Municipality of Fidenza the purchase of the theatre, but encountered opposition from Duchess Maria Luigia, who considered the work too burdensome for the public coffers; in 1835 a violent storm destroyed the roof under construction, deeply damaging the stage and the load-bearing structures that were not yet finished.[3]

In 1848 the Municipality purchased the area, by then occupied by the ruins of the theater under construction, and in 1854 entrusted the direction of the works to the engineer Antonio Armarotti, who restarted the construction site by making various changes to the original project by Bettoli, which was deemed too expensive; the unexpected collapse of the nearby church of San Giovanni allowed savings on construction materials, significantly speeding up the works.[3]

Girolamo Magnani from Fidenza, assisted by Giuseppe Giacopelli and Francesco Spada, intervened for the interior decorations and the theater was completed in 1861; the solemn inauguration was held on October 26 of that year, with the performance of the opera Il trovatore, by Giuseppe Verdi, with sets by Magnani himself.[4]

In 1889 the Municipality decided to name the theatre after the set designer Girolamo Magnani, who died in September of that year.[3]"

"Small but very nice. My only complaint is the seating arrangement in the boxes; the ones beyond first are quite uncomfortable."

"Explaining in a few words why the Teatro Magnani is wonderful is difficult for me, knowing nothing about architecture. I do know that the proportions seem perfect and in fantastic harmony both with the needs of the stage and with the size of the city of Fidenza. All of this is in the utmost pomp, without even a single trinket that suggests kitsch. And then there's a sense of warm intimacy, as if we were all guests in the living room of a princess-like grandmother. In short, beautiful."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Gem of Fidenza: The History of Teatro Girolamo Magnani

The Teatro Girolamo Magnani in Fidenza has a rich and somewhat tumultuous history, beginning on the site of an ancient Franciscan church. After the convent was closed and the church demolished in the early 19th century, a company of 39 individuals commissioned architect Nicolò Bettoli to build a theatre in 1813. However, financial difficulties led to a suspension of works. A significant setback occurred in 1835 when a storm destroyed the unfinished roof, damaging the stage and structures. Reddit

In 1848, the Municipality of Fidenza purchased the site of the ruins. Under the direction of engineer Antonio Armarotti, construction resumed in 1854 with modifications to Bettoli's original, more expensive design. The collapse of the nearby church of San Giovanni unexpectedly provided construction materials, accelerating the process. The interior decorations were completed by Fidenza's own Girolamo Magnani, assisted by Giuseppe Giacopelli and Francesco Spada. The theatre finally opened its doors in 1861 with Verdi's 'Il trovatore,' featuring sets by Magnani. In 1889, the theatre was officially named in honor of the set designer. Reddit

Today, the theatre is celebrated not just for its history but for its aesthetic qualities. Visitors often remark on its perfect proportions and harmonious design, creating a sense of warm intimacy. It's considered a 'little gem' and a 'treasure chest of art' within the city, offering a unique cultural experience. Reddit

Experiencing the Teatro: Atmosphere and Seating

Teatro Girolamo Magnani is renowned for its intimate and harmonious atmosphere. Unlike larger, grander opera houses, this theatre offers a sense of personal connection, often described as feeling like a guest in a princess's living room. The proportions are considered perfect, catering to both the stage's needs and the city's scale, all without resorting to 'kitsch.' This creates a warm and inviting environment for all attendees. Reddit

When it comes to seating, the theatre provides a unique experience. While the overall design is lauded, a common point of feedback relates to the comfort of the boxes. Specifically, seating in boxes located beyond the first row is often noted as being quite uncomfortable. Despite this, the overwhelming sentiment is that the theatre's charm and the quality of the performances far outweigh any minor seating inconveniences. Reddit
