Reviews Summary

San Venanzio Cathedral is widely praised as an 'artistic jewel' and one of the most beautiful cathedrals visited. Visitors are particularly impressed by the rich collection of frescoes, stucco, and paintings, and highly recommend engaging with the knowledgeable volunteer guides who reveal hidden details. While the historical significance is appreciated, some find the exterior less remarkable than the stunning interior.

"The Basilica is a jewel of architecture and art in Fabriano. The interior is beautiful, with a huge surprise, you will find frescoes hidden in a small area behind the altar."

Lachlan Mactavish

"The earliest records date back to 1160, but it was not until 1253, with the transfer of the baptismal font, which until then had been located in Attiggio, that it became the mother church of the city of Fabriano and the surrounding countryside. Due to numerous renovations over the centuries, the last of which was carried out between 1607 and 1617 by the Urbino architect Muzio Oddi, who gave it its current appearance, that only a few architectural elements of the original 14th-century structure remain, such as the external line of the apse and some vestiges of ancient chapels.
To the right of the choir stalls lies the "Chapel of St. Lawrence," whose cycle of 14th-century frescoes by the Fabriano artist Allegretto Nuzi depicts stories from the life of the saint. From the sacristy, one enters the chapel of the Holy Cross and St. John the Evangelist, frescoed by Giovanni di Corraduccio and the Maestro di San Verecondo. The interior of the church features a single, wide nave with six chapels on each side, each adorned with exquisite stucco, gilded friezes, and embellished with works by the most celebrated painters of the time, such as Gentileschi, Cantarini, Salvator Rosa, Claudio Veronese, Guerrieri, Puglia, and Ridolfi. In 1985, the Fabriano artist Guelfo Bianchini created a marvelous stained glass window depicting St. Venanzio, which adorns the Cathedral dedicated to him."
