What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the Doric Temple's incredible ruins and stunning hillside location, often finding it even more impressive in person. The site offers a profound connection to ancient Greek culture and breathtaking views. However, some express disappointment with site management, citing litter and rising admission costs that impact local accessibility.
"Incredible ruins on a hillside. You've seen the pictures but in real life they are even better. As for which entrance to begin at? I went to the eastern entrance and walked tonthe west and back and honestly didn't notice much of a difference in terms of uphill or diwnhill and I am not a spring chicken. However, the most spectacular pasts are at the estern end."

"Free on a Sunday, aside from the bus cost up to the amphitheatre if you want it. The main temple is excellent. Beautiful drive in, no problems at all. Recommended."
David Cunnelly
"The place is beautiful and evocative. However, this beauty is marred by poor management. I am Italian and I know these things. We find rubbish that corrupts the cultural level of the place.
I would also like to point out that for years the cost of admission has been rising by €2 every year. Although a tourist can afford this expense, a Sicilian cannot spend this money. If local people cannot enjoy the beauty of their land, they will not be able to respect it either. And they will continue to treat Sicily like a huge trash can. Let's respect Sicily and make culture accessible to everyone, not just those with a lot of money.
Please write other reviews like mine so that the managers understand how they should behave."

The Architectural Marvel of the Doric Temple
Its strategic location on a rural hillside provides not only a dramatic setting but also commanding views of the surrounding landscape. The temple's isolation and preservation have contributed to its status as one of Sicily's most iconic archaeological sites. Despite its age, the temple stands as a testament to the engineering and aesthetic prowess of the ancient Greeks.
Visitors often remark on the evocative atmosphere of the site, especially when experienced with fewer crowds. The sheer scale and the historical weight of the structure, combined with the natural beauty of its surroundings, create a powerful and memorable experience.
Beyond the Temple: Exploring Segesta's Wider Site
Climbing further up the second peak reveals the remnants of the ancient settlement that once surrounded the temple and theater. Exploring these ruins provides a broader context for understanding life in this ancient city. You can see foundations of buildings, streets, and other structures that paint a picture of a once-thriving community.
The combination of the temple, theater, and settlement ruins, all set against the backdrop of the Sicilian countryside, makes Segesta a comprehensive and rewarding archaeological experience. It’s a place where history, architecture, and natural beauty converge.
The Visitor Experience: Management and Accessibility
Another point of discussion is the rising cost of admission. While a tourist can typically afford these increases, it raises concerns about cultural accessibility for local Sicilians. The sentiment is that making cultural heritage accessible to everyone fosters greater respect and preservation.
Despite these concerns, practical aspects like free parking and the availability of basic facilities such as a bar and restrooms are appreciated. The option of a bus to the theater also adds convenience. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of the site and to advocate for better management and accessibility.
