What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Centovalli Railway offers absolutely fantastic panoramic views and a beautiful, stunning train ride through dramatic alpine landscapes. However, some travelers have experienced significant train delays impacting connections and have noted issues with older, cramped Italian trains and basic, sometimes unusable, onboard facilities. Staff helpfulness regarding delays has also been a point of criticism for some.
"Some great views on this journey through the lower Alps.
Better for adults and travellers rather than young families."

"Absolutely fantastic scenic panoramic views. Beautiful train ride, stunning."
Kim Flanagan
"We booked a train seat from Stresa to Domadossola where we had an hour to explore the old town before catching the Centrovalli train to Locarno, then ferry back to Stresa. Set off on Sunday morning for our 1037 train. Delayed for 65 mins. Lack of information and announcements. Being Sunday nobody answered a phone to help. Train arrived just at the last moment that we could make the connection for the Centrovalli. Missed Domadosola as no time. There is an Italian train and a Swiss train. The Swiss one is plush with panoramic windows and air con. We had the Italian one which was old and cramped. Windows opened for air. Every seat packed. Little leg room. But it was a pleasant trip with some stunning scenery. Locarno was very pricy. £4 for small water from a shop. Ferry back was the best bit. It's a 'must do' trip if you are staying in Stresa. Shame we were unlucky with the train delay."

The Scenic Route: Locarno to Domodossola
Travelers often highlight the contrast between the Italian and Swiss sections, with the Swiss trains generally being more modern and comfortable, featuring panoramic windows that offer unobstructed views. Navigating Train Types and Connections
However, travelers have reported issues with train connections, particularly in Domodossola. Delays on the Centovalli line have sometimes caused passengers to miss their onward SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) trains to destinations like Brig. It's advisable to build in buffer time for your connections, especially if you have tight schedules. Some users have also noted that staff at the stations may not always be the most helpful in resolving these issues, so self-reliance and planning are key.
Best Times to Experience the Centovalli Railway
For a more tranquil experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons or on weekdays. Weekday afternoons can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists. Early mornings can also be spectacular, with soft light illuminating the valleys. Avoid weekends if possible, as they tend to be busier, especially during popular seasons.
