"GSSPs—an acronym for Global Stratigraphic Sections and Points—are rock outcrops that physically mark a boundary between two geological ages and in which the greatest amount of physical, chemical, and paleontological information about that boundary has been found compared to other outcrops also containing the same stratigraphic boundary. On the geologic timescale, the Calabrian is the second of the four stages into which the Pleistocene, the first of the two epochs of the Quaternary, is divided. It spans from 1.806 to 0.781 million years ago (Ma).
The Calabrian derives its name from Calabria, the Italian region where the reference stratigraphic sections for this period were identified. Specifically, at Vrica, 4 km south of Crotone, at an altitude of 159 meters. It is easily accessible, continuously exposed, and devoid of vegetation cover.
The Vrica GSSP was defined by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) and ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) in 1985. It was the first Italian GSSP to be ratified.
The Vrica Section acquired its importance as a GSSP also thanks to the numerous paleontological, biostratigraphic, magnetostratigraphic, and geochronometric studies conducted by numerous specialists.
