"Hordes of tourists from northern parts come to Florence for the art, the archaeology, the culture and the climate so it shouldn't be a surprise that it was just the same 150 years ago. And many of those that didn't make it home came to rest here, in a cemetery set aside for protestant faiths.
Among the English burials are military and diplomatic personnel posted to Florence, people who worked or settled here, and visitors who succumbed to illness or disease.
Although it is called the English Cemetery there are also citizens of the USA, Norway, Switzerland and Russia I spotted, as well as native Florentines.
This small cemetery became full very quickly and there is hardly an inch to spare between the graves and what ground there is has plantings of daffodils and iris making access difficult.
