Porta Fiume, also known as Porta Franca or Porta del Ponte, is one of the historic city gates of Cesena, Italy. Located at the western entrance to the city, its original construction dates back to the 12th or 13th century. In 1491, it underwent a major renovation that gave it its current appearance.
This gate served as a control tower and was one of the two structures located at either end of the Ponte di San Martino, a bridge that crossed the Savio River until 1393. That year, a landslide diverted the river's course, rendering the bridge devoid of its original function. Despite this, the bridge remained intact and continued to be used as an access route to the city, although it no longer crossed the river.
During World War II, Porta Fiume was damaged, but it was restored in the postwar period. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, with the aim of restoring degraded areas of the city, demolitions were carried out that partially affected the ancient defensive structures adjacent to various gates, including Porta Fiume.
Today, Porta Fiume stands as a testament to Cesena's rich architectural and defensive history, reflecting the city's urban evolution over the centuries."
